Wortley, Leeds
Wortley ( ) is an inner city area of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It begins one mile to the west of the city centre. The appropriate City of Leeds ward is called Farnley and Wortley. It was known as ''Wirkelay'' until about 1700. Wortley was a weaving township within the parish of Leeds before it became industrial with coal pits, brickworks, railway yards and engine sheds—including a roundhouse, on Wellington Road. This listed building, originally constructed to house a dozen or so steam locomotives, is now the premises of a major commercial vehicle hire company. In the 1880s, Wortley became incorporated into the expanding (then) town of Leeds. Wortley is divided into three areas: New Wortley, Upper Wortley and Lower Wortley. Wortley, South Yorkshire
Wortley is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. At the 2001 census it had a population of 579, increasing to 626 at the 2011 Census. Wortley is mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book as ''Wirtleie''. Wortley grew up as a settlement where the Sheffield to Halifax road crossed the Cheshire to Rotherham route. In 1250, a Sunday market was briefly established, but this was quickly suppressed by the monks who owned the right to hold markets in Barnsley. In 1307, the village finally received a Royal Charter to hold a weekly Thursday market and an annual three-day fair at Whitsun. The market and fair both soon ceased, and an eighteenth-century attempt to revive the fair was unsuccessful. The parish church of St. Leonard's dates back to the medieval period, being rebuilt during the 18th century. Wortley Hall is a stately home in the small South Yorkshire village of Wortley, located south of Barnsley, England. For more than six decades the hall has been chiefly associated with the British Labour movement. It is currently used by several trades unions and other organisations as a venue for residential training courses and other meetings, as well as for purely social gatherings. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with graduated slate roofs to an irregular floor plan, mostly in 2 storeys with a 7-bay south front. Alexander Wortley
Alexander Stuart Wortley (born 1899 in York, d. 1980), was an English eccentric. A Royal Navy veteran, he served in the Battle of Jutland aboard HMS ''Agincourt'' as runner to Captain Thynne. Wortley died aged 80 having lived at least 25 years in a green painted box in a garden in Rowley Cottage, Langley Park, Buckinghamshire, donated by his friend David Moreau. It measured 5 x 4 x 3 feet with an extension for his feet and, with wheels. He was quoted as saying, to keep women out. He paid no rent, rates or taxes and did not believe in insurance, pensions or governments. It was listed in the ''Guinness Book of World Records'' as the smallest residence of the world. Russell Paul Wortley is an Australian politician who has served in the South Australian Legislative Council for the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party since the 2006 election. He has served as President of the South Australian Legislative Council from 2014 to the 2018 election. Sir Edward Wortley Montagu (8 February 167822 January 1761) was Great Britain, British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, husband of the writer Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and father of the writer and traveller Edward Wortley Montagu (traveller), Edward Wortley Montagu. Son of Sidney Wortley Montagu and grandson of Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich, Wortley Montagu was educated at Westminster School, Trinity College, Cambridge (1693) and trained in the law at the Middle Temple (1693). He was called to the bar in 1699 and entered the Inner Temple in 1706. He was best known for his correspondence with, seduction of, and elopement with Mary Pierrepont, daughter of Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull. They married in 1712. Edward Wortley Montagu (traveller)
Edward Wortley Montagu (15 May 1713 – 29 April 1776) was an English author and traveller. He was the son of the diplomat and member of parliament Edward Wortley Montagu and the writer and traveller Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, whose talent and eccentricity he seems to have inherited. In 1716, he was taken by his parents to Constantinople, and at Pera in March 1716-17 was inoculated for smallpox, the first native of the United Kingdom to undergo this medical procedure. On the return of his parents to England in 1718, he was placed at Westminster School, from which he ran away more than once. On the first occasion, in July 1726, he was traced to Oxford, and was with difficulty 'reduced to the humble condition of a school-boy.'
