Wormer
Wormer is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Wormerland, and lies about 13 km northwest of Amsterdam. The town is situated in the Zaan district, on the eastern side of the river Zaan, across from Wormerveer. The town is surrounded by the nature area Wormer- en Jisperveld. The village of Oostknollendam, the polder Schaalsmeer (reclaimed in 1631), the polder Enge Wormer (reclaimed in 1634) and a part of the Markerpolder also historically belong to the area of Wormer. Wormer, together with Engewormer (Wormer c.a.), was a separate municipality until 1991, when it became a part of the new municipality of Wormerland. Jisp
Jisp is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Wormerland, and lies about 8 km west of Purmerend. History Jisp, in older forms Gispe (1328, 1387), Gyspe (1344), is named after a river with the same name, that had an open connection to the North Sea. Its river name is a composite of 'gis' and 'apa'. The first part means 'gisten', ''to foam''. The second part has the meaning of ''water'', indicating a place where by tidal influences ''foaming water'' occurred. River names containing 'apa' have possibly an prehistoric and Celtic origin, dating back to a period where humans did only live in the area in certain periods of the year to herd their cattle. Wormerveer
Wormerveer is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Zaanstad, and lies about 13 km northwest of Amsterdam. Wormerveer developed in the 15th century on the west bank of the Zaan river. It started to industrialise with windmills in the 17th century, however none of the windmills exist any more. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1639 to replace the medieval church which was destroyed in 1574 by Spanish troops. Wormerveer was a separate municipality until 1974, when it became a part of the new municipality of Zaanstad. Wormer- En Jisperveld
The Wormer- en Jisperveld is a nature area, covering 18 km2 (of which 0.7 km2 are a protected area), situated between the towns De Rijp, Purmerend en Wormerveer. The area consists mainly of marshland, grassland and open water. Wildlife The Wormer- en Jisperveld contains nationally important populations of nesting birds as the great bittern, ruff, godwit, gadwall and shoveler. The area is also important for foraging birds as for instance the spoonbill and various species of snipes and harriers. Among the wintering birds there are significant numbers of wigeons and geese. The Wormer- en Jisperveld is also one of the last havens for the unique and rare Dutch subspecies of the tundra vole (''Microtus oeconomus arenicola''). Zaan
The Zaan () is a small river in the province of North Holland in the northwestern Netherlands and the name of a district through which it runs. The river was originally a side arm of the IJ bay and travels 13.5 kilometers (8½ miles) through the municipalities of Zaanstad ("Zaan City") and Wormerland north of Amsterdam, from West-Knollendam in the north to Zaandam in the south, where it empties into the IJ. North Holland

Geertruid Adriaansdochter (?? in Wormer – 1573 in IJpesloot near Amsterdam), was a Dutch farmer. She was hanged by Protestant farmers as a Catholic when she attempted to bring food to her brother, a Catholic priest in Amsterdam, who was at the point under siege by the Protestants. George Baker (musician)
George Baker (born Johannes "Hans" Bouwens, 8 December 1944) is a Dutch singer and songwriter who, with his band George Baker Selection, scored two international hits in the 1970s, "Paloma Blanca" and "Little Green Bag". Baker also recorded as a solo artist for a number of years. Childhood Bouwens was born near the end of World War II on 8 December 1944 as the son of a single mother on the Gravenstraat in Hoorn, at or near the location where Jan Pieterszoon Coen was born in 1587. Months before Bouwens was born, his father, Peppino Caruso, a former Italian soldier from Calabria put to labor by the Germans in nearby Grosthuizen, had been killed while attempting to escape when he was to be transferred to Germany.
