Wordie Glacier
Wordie Glacier ( da, Wordie Gletscher) is a glacier in northeastern Greenland. It has its terminus on the east coast of the Greenland ice sheet. This glacier was named after Scottish polar explorer James Wordie (1890–1962) by the 1926–27 expedition led by Lauge Koch. Geography The Wordie Glacier is quite large and several nunataks rise above it. It flows for about 80 km from the NW east of Stenoland and west of Payer Land. The glacier has several branches, including the Vibeke Glacier and the smaller Iris Glacier to the west, and the Granta Glacier that drains into the Granta Fjord to the east. Faraway How and C. H. Ostenfeld Nunatak are located in the Wordie Glacier. The terminus of the Wordie Glacier is north of the Norlund Alps, in the Wordie Bay, a small bay at the head of the Godthab Gulf, southwest of Clavering Island. Moraine
A moraine is any accumulation of unconsolidated debris (regolith and rock), sometimes referred to as glacial till, that occurs in both currently and formerly glaciated regions, and that has been previously carried along by a glacier or ice sheet. It may consist of partly rounded particles ranging in size from boulders (in which case it is often referred to as boulder clay) down to gravel and sand, in a groundmass of finely-divided clayey material sometimes called glacial flour. Lateral moraines are those formed at the side of the ice flow, and terminal moraines were formed at the foot, marking the maximum advance of the glacier. Other types of moraine include ground moraines (till-covered areas forming sheets on flat or irregular topography) and medial moraines (moraines formed where two glaciers meet). Tyrolerfjord
Tyrolerfjord is a fjord in King Christian X Land, East Greenland. Administratively it is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park zone. History During the 1869–70 Second German North Polar Expedition of Carl Koldewey this body of water was surveyed by Julius Payer, who was impressed by the beauty of the Alpine-type mountain ranges surrounding the fjord and named it after the Tyrol historical region in the Alps. Since the fjord forms a geographic whole with Young Sound, which had previously been named by William Scoresby, Koldewey used the name "Tyrolerfjord" —or "Tiroler Fjord" in the reports by Julius Payer— for the whole water body, all the way to its mouth in Gael Hamke Bay. Later, during the 1929–1930 Expedition to East Greenland, Lauge Koch reinstated the name "Young Sund" for the outer section of the water body. Clavering Island
Clavering Island ( da, Clavering Ø) is a large island in eastern Greenland off Gael Hamke Bay, to the south of Wollaston Foreland. The Eskimonaes ''(Eskimonæs)'' radio and weather station was on this island. It was staffed by Danish scientists and was captured by German troops in 1943. The place where the station stood had also been the location of the last Inuit settlement in Northeast Greenland around 1823. The Norlund Alps ( da, Nørlund Alper) are a mountain range in King Christian X Land, East Greenland. Administratively these mountains are part of the Northeast Greenland National Park.Google Earth History The range was named during the 1929–1930 Expedition to East Greenland by Lauge Koch after Danish mathematician Niels Erik Nørlund (1885–1980) and after the Alps, for the mountains form an impressive Alpine landscape.
