Woolpit was an electoral ward of Mid-Suffolk district, in Suffolk, England, named after the village of Woolpit. The ward was abolished in 2019 when new wards were formed throughout the district; Woolpit village became part of Elmswell & Woolpit Ward. Mid Suffolk is a local government district in Suffolk, England. Its council was based in Needham Market until late 2017, and is currently sharing offices with the Suffolk County Council in Ipswich. The largest town of Mid Suffolk is Stowmarket. The population of the district taken at the 2011 Census was 96,731. Suffolk
Suffolk () is a ceremonial county of England in East Anglia. It borders Norfolk to the north, Cambridgeshire to the west and Essex to the south; the North Sea lies to the east. Woolpit
Woolpit ( ) is a village in the English county of Suffolk, midway between the towns of Bury St. Edmunds and Stowmarket. In 2011 Woolpit parish had a population of 1,995. It is notable for the 12th-century legend of the green children of Woolpit and for its parish church, which has especially fine medieval woodwork. Administratively Woolpit is a civil parish, part of the district of Mid Suffolk. History The village's name, first recorded in the 10th century as Wlpit and later as Wlfpeta, derives from the Old English ''wulf-pytt'', meaning "pit for trapping wolves". Before the Norman conquest of England, the village belonged to Ulfcytel Snillingr. Between 1174 and 1180, Walter de Coutances, a confidant of King Henry II, was appointed to Woolpit. After his "death or retirement" it was to be granted to the monks of Bury St Edmunds Abbey. A bull of Pope Alexander III likewise confirms that revenues from Woolpit are to be given to the abbey. 2011 Mid Suffolk District Council Election
In the 2011 United Kingdom local elections, the Conservative Party held onto the Mid Suffolk District Council for a third term and even increased their majority. The Liberal Democrats lost four seats but remained in second place while the Green Party and the Labour Party each gained a seat, which is Labour's only seat on the Council. 2015 Mid Suffolk District Council Election
The 2015 Mid Suffolk District Council election took place on the 7 May 2015 to elect members of Mid Suffolk District Council in England. It was held on same day as many UK 2015 United Kingdom local elections, local elections and the 2015 United Kingdom general election, general election. Election result 28 Conservative councillors became the governing group of the council (compared to 20-member minority administration with an opposition of 20 before the election) leaving 12 councillors in opposing groups.
