The Dr. Richard Davis House, also known as "Woodside", is a historic Frank Lloyd Wright designed home in the Shady Hills neighborhood in Washington Township, just north of Marion in Grant County, Indiana. Marion is a city in Grant County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,948 as of the 2010 United States Census. The city is the county seat of Grant County. It is named for Francis Marion, a brigadier general from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War. The city is home to Indiana Wesleyan University, the largest evangelical Christian university in the Midwest and Indiana's largest private university, when online and regional campuses in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois are included. The traditional campus enrolls about 2,800 students. Since 2016, Jess Alumbaugh has been Marion's mayor. Marion is the birthplace of actor James Dean and cartoonist Jim Davis. Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, designer, writer, and educator. He designed more than 1,000 structures over a creative period of 70 years. Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and hundreds of apprentices in his Taliesin Fellowship. Wright believed in designing in harmony with humanity and the environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was exemplified in Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture". Wright was the pioneer of what came to be called the Prairie School movement of architecture and also developed the concept of the Usonian home in Broadacre City, his vision for urban planning in the United States. Usonia () is a word that was used by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright to refer to the United States in general (in preference to ''America''), and more specifically to his vision for the landscape of the country, including the planning of cities and the architecture of buildings. Wright proposed the use of the adjective ''Usonian'' to describe the particular New World character of the American landscape as distinct and free of previous architectural conventions. Usonian houses "Usonian" usually refers to a group of approximately 60 middle-income family homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright beginning in 1934 with the Willey House, with most considering the Herbert and Katherine Jacobs First House, 1937, to be the first true "Usonian." Shady Hills, Indiana
Shady Hills is a neighborhood just north of Marion, Indiana in Grant County, Indiana. Like Marion, it is right off of Interstate 69. It was built throughout the 1940s and 1950s on the rolling hills just north of town. There is a golf course (Shady Hills Golf Club) adjoining the neighborhood. Nearby churches include First Friends and First Christian (Disciples of Christ). Marion's Matter Park is also very close. Originally children from Shady Hills attended Oak Hill Schools, but they now attend Marion Community Schools. A notable architectural attraction is the Dr. Richard Davis House, "Woodside" designed by Frank Lloyd Wright located on Overlook Drive that runs through Shady Hills from Indiana 15 to North River Drive. Grant County is a County (United States), county in central Indiana in the United States Midwest. At the time of the 2020 census, the population was 66,674. The county seat is Marion, Indiana, Marion. Important paleontology, paleontological discoveries, dating from the Pliocene epoch, have been made at the Pipe Creek Sinkhole in Grant County.
