''Woodpecker Column'' is a public artwork by the Canadian artist collective FASTWÜRMS, installed by the South Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. FASTWÜRMS
FASTWÜRMS is a Canadian artist collective based in Toronto and Creemore. Founded in 1979, FASTWÜRMS originally had three members: Kim Kozzi, born Kim Kozolanka in Ottawa, Ontario, 1955, Dai Skuse born David Skuse in Oldham, England, 1955, and Napo B. born Napoleon Brousseau in Ottawa, Ontario, 1950. The collective was employed as security guards at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa prior to moving to Toronto in 1980. In the mid-1980s, Napo B. moved to New York City, NYC and formally left the collective in 1991. Kozzi and Skuse have continued to work in Toronto as FASTWÜRMS. Career In 1981 FASTWÜRMS began exhibiting at Ydessa Hendeles, The Ydessa Gallery in Toronto. They are currently represented by Paul Petro Contemporary. Metro Toronto Convention Centre (originally and still colloquially Metro Convention Centre, and sometimes MTCC), is a convention complex located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada along Front Street (Toronto), Front Street West in the former Railway Lands in downtown Toronto. Pileated Woodpecker
The pileated woodpecker (''Dryocopus pileatus'') is a large, mostly black woodpecker native to North America. An insectivore, it inhabits deciduous forests in eastern North America, the Great Lakes, the boreal forests of Canada, and parts of the Pacific Coast. It is the largest confirmed extant woodpecker species in North America, with the possible exception of the ivory-billed woodpecker, which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed be reclassified as extinct. It is also the third largest species of woodpecker in the world, after the great slaty woodpecker and the black woodpecker. "Pileated" refers to the bird's prominent red crest, from the Latin meaning "capped". The yellow-bellied sapsucker (''Sphyrapicus varius'') is a medium-sized woodpecker that breeds in Canada and the northeastern United States. Taxonomy The yellow-bellied sapsucker was described and illustrated using a hand-coloured plate by the English naturalist Mark Catesby in his ''The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands'' which was published between 1729 and 1732. When in 1766 the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus updated his ''Systema Naturae'' for the twelfth edition, he included the yellow-bellied sapsucker, coined the binomial name ''Picus varius'' and cited Catesby's book. The specific epithet ''varius'' is the Latin word meaning "various", "diverse" or "variegated". Linnaeus specified the type locality as ''America septentrionali'' (North America) but the locality is now restricted to South Carolina. Sculpture is the branch of the visual arts that operates in three dimensions. Sculpture is the three-dimensional art work which is physically presented in the dimensions of height, width and depth. It is one of the plastic arts.
