The electoral district of Ovens Valley is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in Australia. It was created in the redistribution of electoral boundaries in 2013, and came into effect at the 2014 state election. It largely covers areas from the abolished district of Murray Valley, centering on the city of Wangaratta. It includes the towns of Yarrawonga, Cobram, and other towns in the local government areas of Moira, Wangaratta, and Alpine. The Division of Indi (pronounced ) is an Australian electoral division in the state of Victoria. The division is located in the north-east of the state, adjoining the border with New South Wales. The largest settlements in the division are the regional cities of Wodonga, Wangaratta, and Benalla. Other towns in the electorate include Rutherglen, Mansfield, Beechworth, Myrtleford, Bright, Alexandra, Tallangatta, Corryong and a number of other small villages (including the ski resort of Falls Creek). While Indi is one of the largest electorates in Victoria, much of it is located within the largely uninhabited Australian Alps. Alpine Shire
The Alpine Shire is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of and in 2022 had a population of 13,235. It includes the towns of Bright, Dinner Plain, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford. There are two unincorporated areas within the shire: the areas around Mount Hotham and Falls Creek. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Bright, Shire of Myrtleford, and parts of the United Shire of Beechworth, Shire of Oxley, Shire of Yackandandah and Shire of Omeo. Wonnangatta Station
The Wonnangatta Station was a cattle station located in a remote valley of the Victorian Alps in Australia. According to writer Harry Stephenson the station, while it operated, was "the most isolated homestead in Victoria (Australia), Victoria". Location During the station's operation, the nearest population centres were the goldfield towns of Talbotville, about away, Grant and Dargo, Victoria, Dargo to the south-east, and the larger town of Mansfield, Victoria, Mansfield, about away over the Great Dividing Range. The Wonnangatta Station homestead was accidentally burnt down by bushwalkers in 1957. Some stockyards and the old cemetery, which has been restored to something resembling its original form, survive. Wonnangatta Murders
The Wonnangatta murders occurred in late 1917 and in 1918, in the remote Wonnangatta Valley in East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The victims were Jim Barclay, the manager of Wonnangatta Station, and John Bamford, a cook and general hand. Barclay was a well-respected and much-liked bushman, while Bamford was regarded with suspicion, and was known to be easily roused into violent tempers. The case has never been solved. Barclay and Bamford James ("Jim") Barclay was employed as the Wonnangatta Station manager in about 1916. He usually lived alone at the station. Aged in his late 40s, he had previously lost his wife to tuberculosis and left his newborn child James (also "Jim") to be cared for by relatives.
