Women In Singapore Politics
Traditionally, women in Singapore played a small role in the country's political scene. Since 1984, Singapore has seen an increase in female representation as more women chose to run for political office. Notable female politicians include the two former ministers: former Acting Minister for Community Development Seet Ai Mee and former Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Hwee Hua; Minister of State Yu-Foo Yee Shoon; and Amy Khor Lean Suan, a district mayor. Several women also became Nominated members of parliament, representing a range of societal interests such as women's groups and conservation groups. Women in Singapore, particularly those who have joined Singapore's workforce, are faced with balancing their traditional and modern-day roles in Singaporean society and economy. According to the book ''The Three Paradoxes: Working Women in Singapore'' written by Jean Lee S.K., Kathleen Campbell, and Audrey Chia, there are "three paradoxes" confronting and challenging the career women of Singapore. Firstly, Singapore's society expects women to become creative and prolific corporate workers who are also expected to play the role of traditional women in the household, particularly as wife and mother. Secondly, Singaporean women are confronted by the "conflict between work and family" resulting from their becoming members of the working population. Aline Wong
Aline Wong (born Kan Lai Chung, in 1941) is a Singaporean sociologist and former politician. She was one of the first women Parliament members in Singapore, elected in 1984. She went on to have a career in both politics and education. In 2001, she retired from politics, but continued to be active in the community and in education. In 2015, she became the first woman in Singapore to hold the position of chancellor, working at SIM University. Biography Wong was born in Hong Kong in 1941. Wong studied sociology and worked on issues involving the way Singapore's families were changing and how women were becoming involved in different areas of culture and the economy. Foo Mee Har ( zh, s=胡美霞, p=Hú Měixiá; born 1966) is a Singaporean politician and businesswoman. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), she has been the Parliament of Singapore, Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Ayer Rajah–Gek Poh division of West Coast Group Representation Constituency, West Coast GRC since 2011. Cheng Li Hui
Cheng Li Hui (; born 1976) is a Singaporean politician and businesswoman. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), she has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Tampines East division of Tampines GRC since 2015. The East Coast Group Representation Constituency is a five-member Group Representation Constituency in the eastern area of Singapore. Claire Chiang
Claire Chiang (; born 4 October 1950) is a Singaporean entrepreneur, activist and former Nominated Member of Parliament. She is the co-founder of hospitality group Banyan Tree and one of the first two women to be admitted to the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) in 1995. Chiang has advocated for issues on education and gender equality. She was inducted into the Singapore Women's Hall of Fame in 2018. Kanwaljit Soin
Dr Kanwaljit Soin is a consultant orthopaedic & hand surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. Education Soin studied in Tanjong Katong Girls' School for her secondary education and Victoria School for her pre-university education, and received her MBBS Hons in 1966 when she graduated top of her class. She obtained her Master of Medicine (Surgery) in 1970 from the University of Singapore, and she is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (1970) and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (1975). 2011 Singapore General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 7 May 2011. President S. R. Nathan dissolved parliament on 19 April 2011 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Voting is mandatory in Singapore and is based on the first-past-the-post system. Elections are conducted by the Elections Department, which is under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister's Office. Nomination day was held on 27 April 2011, and for the second election in a row, the PAP did not return to government on nomination day, but it did return to government on polling day. This election also marked the first and the only three-cornered fight since 2001 in Punggol East SMC before it increased to four-cornered fight on a by-election held two years later. The Aljunied Group Representation Constituency is a five-member group representation constituency (GRC) in the north-eastern and eastern region of Singapore. The GRC consists of five divisions: Eunos, Bedok Reservoir-Punggol, Kaki Bukit, Serangoon and Paya Lebar.
