Women's Suffrage In Scotland
Women's suffrage was the seeking of the right of women to vote in elections. It was carried out by both men and women, it was a very elongated and gruelling campaign that went on for 86 years before the Representation of the People Act 1918 was introduced on 6 February 1918, which provided a few women with the right to vote. One of the first three UK societies supporting women's rights to vote was established in 1867, in Scotland's capital, the Edinburgh National Society for Women's Suffrage. Role of different groups Later Scotland's suffragettes were part of the British Women's Social and Political Union militant movement, and took part in campaigns locally and in London; for example when Winston Churchill arrived to stand for election as M.P. in Dundee in 1908 he was followed by 27 of the national leaders of the women's suffrage movements. ''Top Trumps'' is a card game first published in 1978. Each card contains a list of numerical data, and the aim of the game is to compare these values to try to trump and win an opponent's card. A wide variety of different packs of ''Top Trumps'' has been published. Gameplay A pack of cards is based on a theme, such as cars, aircraft, books, boats, dinosaurs, or characters from a popular film or television series. Shetland Women's Suffrage Society
The Shetland Women's Suffrage Association was an organisation involved in campaigning for women’s suffrage, based in Shetland. Formation The association was formed in 1909. Their first meeting was held in the home of Christina Jamieson on 23 October 1909. There were 19 women and 1 man present, and the meeting was convened by Christina Jamieson Activities The organisation was affiliated to the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies. As such, their activities mirrored those of many other suffragist groups. They conveyed their message by addressing public meetings, distributing leaflets, and writing to the local press to promote the cause of women's suffrage. In 1911, a banner, created by Stanley Cursiter, of the Orcadian Women's Suffrage Society, and Christina Jamieson was taken to London for the Suffrage Coronation Procession. The Orcadian Women's Suffrage Association was an organisation involved in campaigning for women’s suffrage, based in Orkney, Scotland. Formation The first meeting of the society was held in the house of James and Bina Cursiter on September 25, 1909. The Stornoway Women's Suffrage Association was an organisation that campaigned for women's suffrage, based in Stornoway, Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland, the Hebrides. Hebridean women's lives The association was formed of 25 women, from a community very different from the middle class London or working class factory women joining the big city suffrage societies, or the militant Women's Social and Political Union (suffragette) activities elsewhere in Scotland and across Britain. Hebridean women were mainly heavy manual workers, physically strong women who gutted fish for the herring trawler industry, following the fleet locally, and travelling with other women from fishing villages around the coast of Scotland and Britain in the herring season.
