Wolf Furniture was a furniture retailer operating eighteen showrooms throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia under the Wolf Furniture and Gardiner Wolf Furniture store names. History The company, originally City Furniture Company, was founded in 1902 by Charles Wolf and John Fox in downtown Altoona, Pennsylvania. In 1915, Wolf bought out Fox's interests, constructed a new five story building in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and renamed the business Wolf Furniture Company. At that time, it was the largest furniture store between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. After Wolf's death in 1918, sons George and Herbert opened ten locations in and around Altoona. Levin Furniture is a furniture and mattress retailer with 28 stores in Pennsylvania and Ohio. History The company was founded in 1920 by Sam and Jessie Levin in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania as a general sales clearance center. In the 1940s, the Levin family phased out other items in order to concentrate on furniture. Leonard Levin, son of Sam and Jessie, joined the company during this time and eventually became president. Heilig-Meyers was a retail furniture store chain founded in Goldsboro, North Carolina, in 1913 by two Lithuanian immigrants, W. A. Heilig and J. M. Meyers. Its corporate headquarters was in Richmond, Virginia. The chain grew to become the largest furniture retailer in the United States in the 1990s, ultimately having over 1,000 stores nationwide (including Puerto Rico). Its over-expansion—by purchasing over 100 McMahan's Furniture stores based in Carlsbad, California, in 1993, as well as other stores and chains in the West—contributed to its failure. The company also bought the L. Fish furniture chain in the Chicago area; those stores were closed in 1999.
