Woland
Woland (russian: Воланд) is a fictional character in the novel ''The Master and Margarita'' by the Russian (Soviet) author Mikhail Bulgakov, written between 1928 and 1940. Woland is the mysterious foreigner and professor whose visit to Moscow sets the plot rolling and turns the world upside-down. His demonic retinue, which includes witches, vampires, and a gigantic talking cat, his role in the plot, and the fact that ''Voland'' is a (now outdated) German word for a devil or evil spirit, all imply that he is, in fact, the Devil. More controversial interpretations see him as the Apostle Peter (based on Jesus’ remark to Peter, "Get thee behind me, Satan") or even the Second Coming of Christ. Woland is an upcoming film based on Mikhail Bulgakov's novel ''The Master and Margarita''. Release is currently scheduled for May 2023. Premise Moscow, 1930s. A prominent writer in Moscow, finds himself at the center of a literary scandal. His works are censored by the Soviet state and are no longer being staged in the theater. His colleagues actively avoid him, and in days he turns into an outcast, kicked out of the writer's union and with no means to survive. Soon afterwards he meets Margarita, a lonely married woman. Revived by her love and support, the writer begins working on a new novel, where all the characters are people he has met in real life. The protagonist of the book is Woland - a mystical dark force who visits Moscow to wreck havoc and take revenge on all those who helped cause the writer's downfall. Veniamin Smekhov
Veniamin Borisovich Smekhov (russian: Вениами́н Бори́сович Сме́хов; born August 10, 1940 in Moscow) is a Soviet and Russian stage and film actor and director. He was the winner of the Petropol Award (2000) as well as the Tsarskoselsky Artistic Prize (2009). He refused the title of People's Artist of Russia, which was offered to him on his 70th birthday. Smekhov has long worked in the Moscow Taganka Theatre where his roles included Woland in a stage adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's ''The Master and Margarita''. Gustaw Teofil Holoubek (21 April 1923 – 6 March 2008) was a Polish actor, director, member of the Polish Sejm, and a senator. Holoubek participated in the September Campaign and was a prisoner of war during the Nazi German Occupation of Poland.
