Wodonga Football Club
The Wodonga Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Bulldogs'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the city of Wodonga, Victoria. History Wodonga's first recorded match was against the Albury Football Club on Saturday, 6 July 1878 in Wodonga. Between 1878 and 1891, Wodonga played many intermittent friendly matches against other local club's and towns, before organised fixtures and competitions were starting to be arranged from the early 1890s. In 1886, the Wodonga Junior Football Club played Chiltern in a very rough match, with T Powell captaining the winning Wodonga side and in 1887, Wodonga Junior's journeyed to and were beaten by Chiltern. Walter Pemberton captained the side. In 1891, Wodonga "Starlights" played in a series of matches against Albury United, Chiltern, Osborne's Flat and Wagga Wagga. Ovens & Murray Football League
The Ovens and Murray Football Netball League (O&MFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball competition containing ten clubs based in north-eastern Victoria, the southern Riverina region of New South Wales and the Ovens and Murray area. The name comes from the Ovens River, the river in the part of north-eastern Victoria covered by the league, and the Murray River, which separates Victoria and New South Wales. The league features three grades in the Australian rules football competition, with these being First-Grade, Reserve-Grade and Under 18s. In the netball competition, there are four grades, with these being A-Grade, B-Grade, C-Grade and Under 16s. Currently a home and away season consisting of eighteen rounds is played. The best five teams then play off according to the McIntyre System, culminating in the O&MFNL Grand Final, which from 1995 to 2017 was held at the Lavington Sports Ground in the Albury suburb of Hamilton Valley. It was originally published as ''The Border Morning Mail and Riverina Times'' and later as the ''Border Morning Mail'' before changing its title to ''The Border Mail''. Steven Hedley
Steven Hedley (born 12 September 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Sydney in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Originally from the Wodonga Football Club, he won the Ovens and Murray Football League Under 18 Best and Fairest Award in 1975. The following year he won Wodonga’s reserves best and fairest, played a few senior matches and the next year claimed the Ted West Memorial Trophy for the Bulldogs’ senior best and fairest. He moved to Queensland and starred for Mayne Football Club before coming back to Wodonga for the 1981 season. Hedley was instrumental in Wodonga’s premiership victory that year, winning a feast of possessions as the Bulldogs turned around a 20-goal loss to Albury in the second semi-final. Gary Williamson (footballer)
Gary Williamson (25 September 1941 – 28 March 2009) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond and South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A ruckman, Williamson spent four seasons at Richmond, after arriving from Alvie. He played 15 games in 1961, the most he would play in a single season. Crossing to South Melbourne in 1965, he would only appear in eight rounds, but it was enough to bring up 50 league games. Norm Webb
Norman Arthur "Bunny" Webb (18 May 1921 – 16 June 1996) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Webb was originally from the Granya Football Club and played in their 1939 losing grand final side and shared the 1940 Mitta Valley Football Association best and fairest award with W Hodgkin from Mitta Valley. Webb joined the Army in 1943 and at some stage between 1943 and 1945, Webb played with South Sydney Football Club. He was recruited to Footscray after playing in Granya's 1946 Tallangatta & District Football League premiership and winning the club best and fairest award too. Jack Eames
Jack Eames (22 December 1922 – 16 January 2017) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Eames was one of many present and future VFL footballers who served in World War II. He enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942 and served until he was discharged in 1946. A follower, he made himself available to VFL clubs prior to the 1946 season when he decided to move from his home in Albury, to Melbourne, for work purposes. Four clubs tried to get his signature and it was with Richmond who were successful. However, he would spend only one season at Richmond, playing 14 games. Gordon Strang
Gordon "Cocker" Strang (10 February 1908 – 8 October 1951) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League for the Richmond Football Club between 1931 and 1936. Strang first came under notice when he kicked 10 goals for Jindera FC in the Albury & Border Football Association, in 1927. He was the son of Bill Strang, who played for South Melbourne between 1904 and 1913 (and was South Melbourne's leading goal-kicker in 1913) After a year in Tasmania as captain-coach of North Launceston, he returned to Richmond, and played all of Richmond's 18 matches in the 1938 season, scoring 6 goals. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It includes teams from clubs based in the eastern states of Australia: Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and includes reserves teams for the east coast AFL clubs. The league evolved from the former Victorian Football Association (VFA), and it has been known by its current name since 1996. Mick Bone
Michael Bone (born 3 October 1942) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1960s. Bone, who kicked four goals in his second VFL game, was recruited from Thornbury YMCW. Mainly used as a rover, he played all 21 games in 1964 and appeared in the 1964 VFL Grand Final loss to Melbourne. He also had a long career in the Ovens & Murray Football League, playing 144 games for Wodonga. The Corowa Football Club, nicknamed the Spiders, was an Australian rules football club based in Corowa, New South Wales, that competed in the Ovens & Murray Football League. The club merged with the Wahgunyah Football Club on several occasions during its early history and as a result was also known as the Border United Football Club from time to time between 1877 and 1947. Then in 1979, both Corowa Football Club and Rutherglen Football Club merged to form Corowa Rutherglen Football Club and have played in the Ovens and Murray Football League ever since. ''The Corowa Free Press'' was a weekly English language newspaper published in Corowa, New South Wales, Australia, between 1875 and 1928. History ''The Corowa Free Press'' was first launched by James Crauford Leslie and John William Hutchinson Wyse on 8 October 1875. James Crauford Leslie (1848-1907) was born in Scotland and emigrated to Melbourne, Australia with his family in 1854. In 1874 after being decorated for his involvement in the Maori Wars, he moved to Wahgunyah, Victoria to manage ''The Chronicle'' which served the cross-border towns of Wahgunyah and Corowa in New South Wales. After ''The Chronicle'' folded in September 1875, Leslie crossed the border to set up The Corowa Free Press.
