Witton F.C.
Witton Football Club was a football club from Blackburn in Lancashire. History The club was founded in 1874 as a footballing branch of the St Mark's Cricket Club. It originally played under the name St Mark's in Pleasington, to the west of the town. The club changed its name and ground before the 1880–81 season. The first reported matches for the club are from October 1876. The club was a founder member of the Lancashire Football Association and took part in the first Lancashire Senior Cup in 1879–80. The club had already reached its first Cup final, the Livesey United Cup, in 1878, losing to Blackburn Olympic in the final. The first success for the club was in April 1879, winning a competition set up to raise funds for local hospitals, by beating Darwen Lower Chapel 2–0 in the final, receiving as a prize a set of goalposts, crossbar, boundary poles, and flags. Blackburn () is an industrial town and the administrative centre of the Blackburn with Darwen borough in Lancashire, England. Darwen is a market town and civil parish in the Blackburn with Darwen borough in Lancashire, England. The residents of the town are known as "Darreners". The A666 road passes through Darwen towards Blackburn to the north, Bolton to the south and Pendlebury where it joins the A6, about north-west of Manchester. The population of Darwen stood at 28,046 in the 2011 census. The town comprises five wards and has its own town council. The town stands on the River Darwen, which flows from south to north and is visible only in the outskirts of the town, as within the town centre it runs underground. Willie Almond
William Almond, known as Willie Almond (5 April 1868 – 1942), was an English footballer who played in The Football League for Accrington, Blackburn Rovers, and Northwich Victoria. In 1887 Almond signed with Witton, the year Witton FC recruited 19 professional footballers. Witton had its best run in both the FA Cup and the Lancashire Cup. What role Almond played in these cup runs is not recorded. Season 1888–1889 Blackburn Rovers had a highly successful inaugural league season in 1888–1889. The Lancashire League has been the name of two separate football competitions for clubs based in northern England. Lancashire League (1889 to 1903) The original Lancashire League was formed in 1889, and was established because of the success of the Football League, which had been established just one year earlier. Prime movers in the formation of the league were the officials of Bury Football Club, who had ambitions to set up a regional competition which would be a stepping stone for them and other clubs to gain a place in the Football League. Although the majority of the clubs were based in the county of Lancashire, the league did eventually accept several clubs from neighbouring Cheshire.
