Elizabeth Washington Gamble Wirt
Elizabeth Washington Gamble Wirt (1784–1857), who published under the name E. W. Wirt, was a 19th-century American author whose ''Flora's Dictionary'' was the first book to broadly popularize the concept of a language of flowers for American readers. Education and family Elizabeth Washington Gamble was born in Richmond, Virginia, on January 30, 1784, to Colonel Robert Gamble and Catherine Grattan Gamble. She was educated at a female seminary, probably acquiring a knowledge of Latin that would prove useful later when she turned to authorship. In 1802, she became the second wife of William Wirt, a future attorney-general of the United States. During their marriage, Elizabeth ran the household and also managed most business affairs related to their properties. The Wirts lived in Virginia and Washington, D.C., and after Elizabeth was widowed in 1834, she moved to Florida. She died in Annapolis, Maryland on January 24, 1857. ''Over the Garden Wall'' is an American animated television miniseries created by Patrick McHale for Cartoon Network. The series centers on two half-brothers who travel across a mysterious forest to find their way home, encountering a variety of strange and fantastical things on their journey. The show is based on McHale's animated short film '' Tome of the Unknown'', which was produced as part of Cartoon Network Studios' shorts development program. 2044 Wirt, provisional designation , is a binary Phocaea asteroid and Mars-crosser, approximately 6.7 kilometers in diameter. The minor-planet moon has an estimated diameter of 1.89 kilometer. The asteroid was discovered on 8 November 1950, by American astronomer Carl Wirtanen at Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton, California, and later named after the discoverer himself. Orbit and classification ''Wirt'' is both a member of the main-belt's Phocaea family () and a Mars-crossing asteroid, whose orbit crosses that of Mars. Wirt County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,194, making it the least populous county in West Virginia. Its county seat is Elizabeth. The county was created in 1848 by the Virginia General Assembly and named for U.S. Attorney General and presidential candidate William Wirt. The county is served by one high school, Wirt County High School. Wirt County is part of the Parkersburg-Vienna, WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wirt Williams (August 21, 1921 – June 29, 1986) was an American novelist, journalist, and professor of English. Early life and education Born on August 21, 1921 on the campus of the Goodman, Mississippi-based agricultural school headed by his father (which would later become Holmes Community College), Williams was raised in Cleveland, Mississippi where he was graduated from Cleveland High School (Cleveland, Mississippi). Williams took his undergraduate degree at Delta State University and in 1941, was awarded a master's degree in journalism from Louisiana State University.
