Winthrop is an unincorporated community in southwest Buchanan County, Missouri, Buchanan County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. The community is just east of the Missouri River and Atchison, Kansas on US Route 59 and Missouri routes Missouri Route 45, 45 and Missouri Route 273, 273. Rushville, Missouri, Rushville is approximately 4.5 miles northeast on US Route 59 and Lewis and Clark Village, Missouri, Lewis and Clark Village adjacent to the Louis and Clark State Park and lake is 3.5 miles southeast. History An variant name was "East Atchison". A post office called Winthrop was established in 1861, the name was changed to East Atchison in 1878, and the post office closed in 1923. Buchanan County is located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 84,793. Its county seat is St. Joseph. When originally formed in 1838, the county was named Roberts County, after settler Hiram Roberts. Atchison, Kansas
Atchison is a city and county seat of Atchison County, Kansas, United States, along the Missouri River. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 10,885. The city is named in honor of US Senator David Rice Atchison from Missouri and was the original eastern terminus of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. US Route 59
U.S. Route 59 (US 59) is a north–south United States highway (though it was signed east–west in parts of Texas). A latecomer to the U.S. numbered route system, US 59 is now a border-to-border route, part of the NAFTA Corridor Highway System. It parallels U.S. Route 75 for nearly its entire route, never much more than away, until it veers southwest in Houston, Texas. Route 45 is a highway in northwest Missouri, US in Buchanan County and Platte County which is largely in the bottom land alongside the Missouri River. Route description Its northern terminus is U.S. Route 59 just east of Atchison, Kansas where 59 turns sharply to St. Joseph, Missouri north while 45 heads south towards Kansas City, Missouri. It overlaps Route 273 until just south of Weston, Missouri where 273 breaks off to head east. John Winthrop
John Winthrop (January 12, 1587/88 – March 26, 1649) was an English Puritan lawyer and one of the leading figures in founding the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the second major settlement in New England following Plymouth Colony. Winthrop led the first large wave of colonists from England in 1630 and served as governor for 12 of the colony's first 20 years. His writings and vision of the colony as a Puritan " city upon a hill" dominated New England colonial development, influencing the governments and religions of neighboring colonies.
