Wind-Up Type
is a 1998 Japanese drama film directed by Teruo Ishii. It is an adaptation of Yoshiharu Tsuge, Tsuge Yoshiharu's 1967 manga ''Screw Style''. Production The film is Ishii's eighty-first film. It stars Tadanobu Asano and Miki Fujitani. When asked "What is it about Tsuge's manga that makes you want to adapt them to film?", Ishii answered: "He shows the very poor side of society in Japan, that's what interests me." Release and reception The film has also been released under the title ''Screwed''. Teruo Ishii
was a Japanese film director best known in the West for his early films in the ''Super Giant'' series, and for his films in the ''ero guro'' ("erotic-grotesque") subgenre of ''pinku eiga'' such as ''Shogun's Joy of Torture'' ( 1968). He also directed the 1965 film, ''Abashiri Prison'', which helped to make Ken Takakura a major star in Japan. Referred to in Japan as "The King of Cult", Ishii had a much more prolific and eclectic career than was generally known in the West during his lifetime. Early life Born in Tokyo's Asakusa neighborhood in 1924, Ishii developed a love of cinema early. His parents would often take him to see foreign films, particularly French movies. Yoshiharu Tsuge
is a Japanese cartoonist and essayist. He was active in comics between 1955 and 1987. His works range from tales of ordinary life to dream-like surrealism, and often show his interest in traveling about Japan. He has garnered the most attention from the surrealistic works he had published in the late 1960s in the avant-garde magazine ''Garo''. Tsuge began producing comics in 1955 for the rental comics industry that flourished in impoverished post-War Japan. Initially, he made comics in the hard-boiled ''gekiga'' style–dark, realistic tales with negative endings. When rental comics ceased to be viable employment in the mid-1960s, Tsuge was in dire straits until he was picked up by the publishers of the avant garde comics magazine ''Garo''. Screw Style
is a one-shot gekiga written and illustrated by essayist and mangaka Yoshiharu Tsuge. ''Screw Style'' follows of the story of an unnamed boy who goes around several places in war-torn Japan in order to find a doctor who can fix his pierced artery. The manga was first published in the manga anthology magazine ''Garo'' in 1968 to popularity among Japanese youth. The manga has been adapted into a video game and a live action film. Plot A boy arriving ashore in war-torn Japan is bitten by a jellyfish that pierces his artery. He enters a nearby village and goes around looking for a doctor, but finds none. The boy then proceeds to follow a road of railway tracks in hope that it will lead him to the next village, only to get onto a train that brings him back to the village he first entered.
