Winchester By-election, 1997
The 1997 Winchester by-election was a by-election to the UK House of Commons in the constituency of Winchester, Hampshire. Winchester was initially declared to have been won by Mark Oaten (Liberal Democrat) with a majority of two votes at the general election on 1 May 1997, but following a legal challenge, a new election was allowed by the High Court. The by-election, held on 20 November, was won by Oaten with a majority of 21,556. History At the general election on 1 May 1997, Mark Oaten was originally declared the winner, with a majority of two votes over Conservative Gerry Malone, 20 hours after starting to count votes, with many recounts and haggling over spoilt ballots. Oaten was unseated on an electoral petition on 6 October 1997. The High Court held that 54 votes declared void for want of the official mark would have changed the result if counted. Mark Oaten
Mark Oaten (born 8 March 1964) is a British politician who was a senior member of the Liberal Democrats. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Winchester from 1997 to 2010. Born in Watford, Hertfordshire, Oaten became a councillor in local government, joining the centre-left Social Democratic Party, which merged with the Liberal Party to form the Liberal Democrats in 1988. He became the party's Home Affairs spokesman in 2003. He stood for the position of Leader of the Liberal Democrats in 2006, but withdrew from the contest he was later hit by a series of scandals which also led to his resignation as Home Affairs spokesman. He did not seek re-election to the House of Commons at the 2010 general election. Following his retirement from active politics, Oaten published two books, before becoming executive of the International Fur Trade Federation in 2011. 2021 Chesham And Amersham By-election
A by-election was held in the United Kingdom Parliament constituency of Chesham and Amersham on 17 June 2021, following the death of the sitting member, Dame Cheryl Gillan, on 4 April 2021. Gillan had served as MP for the constituency since 1992. The by-election was the third to the 58th Parliament, which was elected in 2019. The Liberal Democrat candidate, Sarah Green, won the by-election with 56.7% of the vote and a swing from the Conservatives of 25.2%. This is the first time a non-Conservative candidate has won this seat since its formation in 1974. The Liberal Democrats subsequently won the by-elections in North Shropshire, in December 2021, and in Tiverton and Honiton, in June 2022. ''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition. The newspaper was controlled by Tony O'Reilly's Irish Independent News & Media from 1997 until it was sold to the Russian oligarch and former KGB Officer Alexander Lebedev in 2010. In 2017, Sultan Muhammad Abuljadayel bought a 30% stake in it. The daily edition was named National Newspaper of the Year at the 2004 British Press Awards. John Ernest Douglas Delavalette Browne (born 17 October 1938) is a British former politician, soldier, investment banker and writer now based in West Palm Beach, Florida, United States of America. Early life Browne was born in Hampshire, raised on a family farm near Bath, and educated at Malvern College, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Cranfield Institute of Technology and Harvard Business School. He served as an officer in the Grenadier Guards from 1959 to 1967 and as the first Guards territorial, in the Grenadier Guards (V), retiring as a Major. Roger Joseph Everest, (born 1939) is a Welsh barrister and independent parliamentary candidate. He was educated at Llandaff Cathedral School, Kingswood School, Bath, and the University of Wales. He contested the Caerphilly constituency for the Conservative Party in the February 1974 general election, and the Brecon and Radnor by-election in July 1985 as a One Nation Conservative. He fought the 1997 Winchester by-election as an independent and fought the 1999 Eddisbury by-election and the constituency of Cheltenham in the 2001 general election under the same banner. Robin Page (journalist)
Robin Page (born May 1943) is an English farmer, conservationist and political activist, who has worked as a journalist and television presenter. Page farms in Barton, Cambridgeshire where he was born, and his work focuses on rural affairs. Countryside Restoration Trust Page founded the CRT in 1993 with the late artist and conservationist, Gordon Beningfield. It promotes a "living" countryside including wildlife-friendly farming. By 2021, when Page's Executive Chairmanship of the CRT ended, it had developed into a nationwide chain of 18 small farms involved with principles of conservation of land, wildlife and farming. As at 2021 Page continues to serve as a trustee. Recent projects involving the CRT include an attempt in 2020 to buy a farm in the Lake District.
