Willmar is a city in, and the county seat of, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 21,015 at the 2020 census. History Agricultural expansion and the establishment of Willmar as a division point on the Great Northern Railway determined its growth. The first settlers arrived during the 1850s, attracted to the fertile land and an abundance of timber and game. The Dakota War of 1862 left the township abandoned for several years. The advent of the railroad in Kandiyohi County in 1869 brought new settlers. Many were of Swedish and Norwegian origin; residents of Scandinavian heritage are still a majority. In 1870, Leon (Chadwick) Willmar, a Belgian acting as an agent for the European bondholder of the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, purchased the title to Section 1 of Willmar Township. Willmar Air Force Station (ADC ID: SM-139) is a closed United States Air Force General Surveillance Radar station. It is located northwest of Willmar, Minnesota. It was closed in 1961. History Willmar Air Force Station was initially part of Phase II of the Air Defense Command Mobile Radar program. The Air Force approved this expansion of the Mobile Radar program on October 23, 1952. Radars in this network were designated “SM.” The station became operational on 1 July 1956 when the 721st Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron was moved to the station by the 31st Air Division. This site became operational in 1957 with the 721st AC&W Squadron operating a variety of radars including AN/FPS-6, AN/FPS-8, AN/MPS-7, and AN/FPS-3 sets, and initially the station functioned as a Ground-Control Intercept (GCI) and warning station. The Willmar Stingers are a baseball team that plays in the Northwoods League, a Collegiate summer baseball, collegiate summer baseball league. The Stingers played their inaugural season in 2010. The team plays its home games at Bill Taunton Stadium, Baker Field at Bill Taunton Stadium. On June 3, 2010, the franchise's first ever hit and run were recorded by former Willmar Cardinal and current Cleveland Indians minor leaguer Jordan Smith. The women were Doris Boshart, Irene Wallin, Sylvia Erickson Koll, Jane Harguth Groothuis, Sandi Treml, Teren Novotny, Shirley Solyntjes, and Glennis Ter Wisscha. They set up a picket line outside the bank when the wind chill was -70 °F (-57 °C). One other employee, Lois Johnson, quit just before the strike began.
