Willingshausen is a municipality in the Schwalm-Eder district in Hesse, Germany. Geography Location The community of Willingshausen lies in the Schwalm area. Neighbouring communities Willingshausen borders in the north on the town of Schwalmstadt, in the northeast on the community of Frielendorf, in the east on the town of Neukirchen and the community of Schrecksbach (all in Schwalm-Eder), in the south on the town of Alsfeld and the community of Antrifttal (both in the Vogelsbergkreis), and in the west on the town of Neustadt (Marburg-Biedenkopf). Gerhardt Wilhelm Von Reutern
Gerhardt Wilhelm von Reutern (17 July 1794, Walk - 22 March 1865, Frankfurt) was a Baltic-German military officer and painter who co-founded the Artists' Colony at Willingshausen. Life He was born into a noble family of Baltic-Germans dating back to the 15th Century. He participated in several campaigns during the Napoleonic Wars as a cavalry lieutenant and lost his right arm at the Battle of Leipzig. While recuperating with relatives, he took up drawing as a hobby. In the Summer of 1814, he made the acquaintance of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who urged him to become a painter. They maintained a steady correspondence until Goethe's death in 1832. After serving in several adjutant positions, he resigned from the Army in 1819 with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. As part of his convalescence, he moved to Willingshausen and was married there in 1820. Four years later, he met Ludwig Emil Grimm and the idea for an Artists' Colony was born. Ludwig Emil Grimm
Ludwig Emil Grimm (14 March 1790 – 4 April 1863) was a German painter, art professor, etcher and copper engraver. Early life Grimm was born in Hanau, Germany, in 1790. His brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were folklorists. Education Grimm studies began at the Kunsthochschule Kassel and Philip Otto Runge, then from 1809 to 1817, he studied at Academy of Fine Arts Munich. In the 1814, he worked as an officer in the campaign against Napoleon. In 1816, he travelled to Italy where he learned engraving from Carl Ernst Christoph Hess and published his first work; a sketchbook of engravings based on his Italian journey. Career In 1819, Grimm contributed the frontispiece for the second edition of ''Kinder- und Hausmärchen'' (Grimm's Fairy Tales). In 1823 and 1826 he was able to secure commissions for two series of portraits of scholars, professors and doctors, thanks to his brothers' connections to the academic community in Göttingen. Alsfeld () is a town in the center of Hesse, in Germany. Located about north of Frankfurt, Alsfeld is in the center of Hesse and part of the densely populated Frankfurt Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region. Antrifttal is a municipality in the Vogelsbergkreis in Hesse, Germany. Geography Location Antrifttal lies, as its name suggests, in the valley (''Tal'') of a brook called the Antrift, a tributary to the Schwalm, between the Vogelsberg in the south and the Knüllgebirge in the northeast (low mountain ranges).
