Williamstown Racecourse Railway Station
Williamstown Racecourse is a demolished station on the former Altona railway line, now part of the Werribee railway line in Melbourne, Australia. It was located in the suburb of Altona, immediately south of the Kororoit Creek Road level crossing and north of Kororoit Creek. History The station was opened in 1885 as the terminus of a 1.1 km branch from the main Geelong line, serving the adjacent Williamstown Racecourse. In 1888, the line was extended to Altona Beach by a private land development company, branching from the station yard on its western side. The station consisted of an island platform, signal box, two run-around roads, and a number of sidings. The line to the station was electrified in 1920 as part of the Melbourne suburban electrification scheme. The Werribee railway line is a commuter rail passenger train service in Melbourne, Australia, operating between Werribee in the western suburbs to Flinders Street in the central business district. Island Platform
An island platform (also center platform, centre platform) is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are popular on twin-track routes due to pragmatic and cost reasons. They are also useful within larger stations where local and express services for the same direction of travel can be provided from opposite sides of the same platform thereby simplifying transfers between the two tracks. A number of railway lines and stations which formed part of the greater Melbourne railway network have been closed over time, either in part or in full. The decision to close a railway station has historically been made by the department responsible for rail transport within the Government of Victoria. Over the history of the Melbourne railway network, a total of eleven complete railway lines, as well as 71 railway stations, have been closed. Williamstown Racecourse
Williamstown Racecourse was a horse racing track located at Altona, Victoria, Australia. Located south of Kororoit Creek, the racecourse was opened in 1869, following the establishment of the Williamstown Racing Club the previous year. In 1885, the Williamstown Racecourse railway station was opened as the terminus of a branch line from the main Geelong line, providing passenger services on race days. In 1931, Phar Lap won the Underwood Stakes at the venue. The last recorded horse race at Williamstown was on 10 February 1940, after which the army commandeered the racecourse for the remainder of World War II. In 1947, fire destroyed both the public and members grandstands.
