William Waters (mayor)
William Reid Waters (died 1881) was Mayor of Nelson, New Zealand from 1 September 1877 to 19 December 1877 and a City Councillor. Private life Waters was a migrant to Nelson where he started a boot and shoe making business in Bridge Street in early 1858. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters Benefit Society, being Treasurer of the Court of Robin Hood for almost 15 years. He was noted as being interested in the welfare of others. Because of this interest, despite ill health, he stood for Council and was elected a Councillor. Political career On 1 September 1877 Edward Everett announced his resignation as Mayor. Reluctantly Waters agreed to be Mayor for the remainder of Everett's term. During Waters' term as Mayor, he oversaw the fund raising in Nelson for the Indian Famine Relief Fund, which was prompted by a telegram from the Lord Mayor of London to the Mayors of New Zealand. The mayor of Nelson is the head of the municipal government of Nelson, New Zealand, and presides over the Nelson City Council. The mayor is directly elected using a single transferable vote electoral system. The current mayor is Nick Smith, who was elected in September 2022. History 1874–1899 Joseph Dodson was elected as the first mayor of Nelson on 1 May 1874 by the city councillors under the Municipal Corporations Act 1867. He was unanimously elected to the position. Dodson was a former member of the Nelson Board of Works. Councillor Fell noted that Dodson had taken great interest in the welfare of Nelson and was an upright gentleman with integrity. The new council came into immediate conflict with the provincial government over finances. Nelson went bankrupt, the mayor resigned on 8 January 1875, and so did most of the councillors. The Foresters Friendly Society is a British friendly society which was formed in 1834 as the Ancient Order of Foresters. As of 31 December 2016, the society had approximately 75,000 members. Its head office is located in Southampton, England. History The society was formed in Rochdale in August 1834, when over 300 branches of the Royal Foresters society (established in the 18th century) formed the new Ancient Order of Foresters. In 1874 the American and Canadian Foresters seceded from the Ancient Order of Foresters and set up the Independent Order of Foresters (IOF). Nelson City Council is a unitary local authority. It has its headquarters in Nelson. History Nelson City Council was created in 1992. Local governance of Nelson began with Nelson Province in 1853, which covered the entire upper South Island. Provinces were abolished in 1876 and replaced with smaller counties and boroughs, including a Nelson Borough. In the 1989 local government reforms, Nelson was made part of the Nelson-Marlborough Regional Council, then in 1992 that regional council was split into multiple parts, including today's Nelson City Council. Edward William Everett
Edward Everett (1821, Hackney, England - 1904, Nelson, New Zealand) was the Mayor of Nelson in the 19th century for two periods. Political career As a Councillor, Everett was named as one of several Councillors who voted for the appointment of Joseph Levien in 1875. Everett was the third Mayor of Nelson, replacing Joseph Levien who died in office. Everett was elected unopposed on 16 June 1876. He was appointed as a Justice of the Peace on 6 July 1876. On 8 December 1876 Councillor Pickering, on behalf of all the Councillors expressed gratitude to the Mayor for his ability to interpret the Acts of Parliament that controlled the council's proceedings and conducting the finances of the corporation. The Great Famine of 1876–1878 was a famine in British Raj, India under Crown rule. It began in 1876 after an intense drought resulted in crop failure in the Deccan Plateau. It affected South India, south and West India, Southwestern India—the British-administered presidencies of Madras Presidency, Madras and Bombay Presidency, Bombay, and the princely states of Kingdom of Mysore, Mysore and Hyderabad State, Hyderabad—for a period of two years. In 1877, famine came to affect regions northward, including parts of the Central Provinces and the North-Western Provinces, and a small area in the Punjab region, Punjab. The famine ultimately affected an area of and caused distress to a population totalling 58,500,000. The excess mortality in the famine has been estimated in a range whose low end is 5.6 million human fatalities, high end 9.6 million fatalities, and a careful modern demographic estimate 8.2 million fatalities. Joseph Dodson
Joseph Reid Dodson JP (1811/12 – 12 October 1890), was the first Mayor of Nelson in New Zealand from 1874. He was a prominent brewer and Resident Magistrate in Nelson and his sixth generation descendants still operate a brewery in the city. Early life Dodson was originally from England. He arrived in Nelson on 16 May 1854 from Melbourne in Australia on the brig ''Return'' (via Wellington). Within days, he bought a share of a Nelson brewery. Soon afterwards, he returned to Melbourne to sort out his business affairs. He returned with his wife and four children on the ''Marchioness'', arriving on 27 September 1854. Professional career After his first arrival from Melbourne, Dodson bought the shares of the late Dr Renwick in the Hooper & Co brewery. In 1855, he established the Raglan Brewery and leased Charles Harley's Bridge Street Brewery. In 1860, he sold his brewery shares and went back to England with his family for six years.
