William Walker (New South Wales Colonial Politician)
William Benjamin Walker (1820 - 9 January 1889) was a politician, merchant, pastoralist and yachtsman from New South Wales, Australia. Walker was the second son of William Walker, a prominent merchant in early colonial Australia. Walker was originally a pastoralist, operating a series of stations in the Bega region, based out of the Kamarooka Estate. He was later a merchant in Sydney, operating the firm of William Walker & Co. He built and lived in the '' Redleaf'' mansion at Double Bay, which he named after his parents' house in England. The property survives, and now serves as the council chambers for the Municipality of Woollahra. He served in the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1863 until his resignation in 1867. He was involved in the establishment of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron in 1863, and served as its Commodore until resigning in 1867; he was reportedly departing permanently for England. Windsor was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, created in 1859 and named after the town of Windsor. It was abolished in 1880. ''Bell's Life in Sydney and Sporting Reviewer'', also published as ''Bell’s Life in Sydney and Sporting Chronicle'', was a weekly English language newspaper published in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia between 1845 and 1870. History The newspaper was first published on 4 January 1845 by Thomas Revel Johnson. He took on a business partner, George Ferrers Pickering, in 1847. However, Johnson left the company in 1848 and was succeeded by Charles Hamilton Nichols (the son of Isaac Nichols). ''Bell’s Life in Sydney and Sporting Reviewer'' was published from 1845 to 1860. The publication was continued as ''Bell’s Life in Sydney and Sporting Chronicle'', which was published from 1860 to 1870. Portland, Victoria
Portland is a city in Victoria, Australia, and is the oldest European settlement in the state. It is also the main urban centre in the Shire of Glenelg and is located on Portland Bay. As of the 2021 census the population was 10,016, increasing from a population of 9,712 taken at the 2016 census. History Early history The Gunditjmara, an Aboriginal Australian people, are the traditional owners of much of south-west Victoria, including what is now Portland, having lived there for thousands of years. They are today renowned for their early aquaculture development at nearby Lake Condah. Physical remains such as the weirs and fish traps are to be found in the Budj Bim heritage areas. Rolf Boldrewood
Thomas Alexander Browne (born Brown, 6 August 1826 – 11 March 1915) was an Australian author who published many of his works under the pseudonym Rolf Boldrewood. He is best known for his 1882 bushranging novel ''Robbery Under Arms''. Biography Browne was born in London, the eldest child of Captain Sylvester John Brown, a shipmaster formerly of the East India Company, and his wife Elizabeth Angell, ''née'' Alexander. His mother was his "earliest admirer and most indulgent critic . . . to whom is chiefly due whatever meed of praise my readers may hereafter vouchsafe" (Dedication Old Melbourne Memories). ''The Catholic Weekly'' is an English language newspaper currently published in Sydney, Australia. It is published in tabloid format. Throughout its history, it has also been published as ''The Freeman's Journal'' and ''Catholic Freeman's Journal''. History The paper's history can be traced back to 27 June 1850 when it was named ''The Freeman's Journal'', under the influence of editor and later-archdeacon John McEncroe (1794–1868). Printer and publisher Jeremiah Moore went onto running a successful bookstore. John Francis Blakeney (–1914) was one of its principal editors, commencing as an apprentice in 1867. The managing director until 1919 was Mr J. H. de Courcy, having started in the printing section of the paper about 1865. ''The Illustrated Sydney News'' was a monthly English language newspaper published in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. History First published on 8 October 1853 by Walter George Mason (1820 – 12 March 1866), William Edward Vernon and Ludolf Theodore Mellin. ''The Illustrated Sydney News'' was published from 1853 to 1872. From 1872 to 1881 the title was changed to ''The Illustrated Sydney News and New South Wales Agriculturist and Grazier'' and then back to the original shorter title between 1881 and 1894. Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron
The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron is a yacht club located in North Sydney, Australia in the suburb of Kirribilli. The squadron was founded in 1862. It has occupied its grounds in East Kirribilli, near Kirribilli House, since 1902. History The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron was founded when nineteen yachtsmen met in the office of William Walker MLC on 8 July 1862, to found a yacht club to be designated 'the Australian Yacht Club'. An application was made for a Royal Warrant and the Patronage of the Prince of Wales. On 27 June 1863 the Commodore, the William Walker MLC, received a letter from the Colonial Secretary's Office notifying him of the Prince of Wales' willingness to become Patron of the 'Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron'.
