William Thorn (Queensland Politician)
William Thorn (3 September 1852 – 1 February 1935) was a grazier and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life William Thorn was born in September 1852 in Ipswich, Queensland, the son of George Thorn and his wife Jane, née Hancock. Politics William Thorn was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the electoral district of Aubigny from 1894 to 1904 and again from 1908 to 1912. Electoral District Of Aubigny
The electoral district of Aubigny was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. It was first created in a redistribution ahead of the 1873 colonial election, and existed until the 1972 state election. Based in the Darling Downs to the north and west of the regional city of Toowoomba, Aubigny was a safe seat for the Country Party, being held by every one of its incarnations from 1915 until 1960, when it was won by the Queensland Labor Party MP Les Diplock, transferring from Condamine. Diplock held the seat as the sole parliamentary representative of the QLP (which merged with the national Democratic Labor Party in 1962) until the seat's abolition in 1972. Its most notable member was Arthur Edward Moore, member from 1915 until 1941 and Premier of Queensland from 1929 to 1932. Henry Thorn
Henry Thorn (6 November 1840 – 19 April 1880) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Henry Thorn was born on 6 November 1840 in Ipswich, Queensland, the son of George Thorn (senior), a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, and his wife Jane (née Handcock). Politics At the 1867 colonial election, Thorn was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the electoral district of Northern Downs. He held that seat until following election 16 months later where he was defeated by Joshua Peter Bell. At the 1873 election, he won back the seat of Northern Downs, which he held until he resigned on 30 October 1876. William Miles won the resulting by-election on 14 November 1876. The Toowoomba Region is a local government area located in the Darling Downs part of Queensland, Australia. Established in 2008, it was preceded by several previous local government areas with histories extending back to the early 1900s and beyond. In 2018-2019, it had a A$491 million budget, of which A$316 million is for service delivery and A$175.13 million capital (infrastructure) budget. Queensland Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). John Thorn (12 December 1847 – 30 April 1896) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life John Thorn was born on 12 December 1847 at Ipswich, Queensland, the son of George Thorn (senior), a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, and his wife Jane (née Handcock). He was educated at Ipswich Grammar School. He married Frances Augusta March, on 3 February 1875 in Sydney. The couple had 5 sons and 2 daughters. Politics His brother George Thorn had represented the seat of Fassifern in the Queensland Legislative Assembly until he resigned on 9 January 1874 to be appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council on that day.
