John Thorn (Queensland Politician)
John Thorn (12 December 1847 – 30 April 1896) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life John Thorn was born on 12 December 1847 at Ipswich, Queensland, the son of George Thorn (senior), a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, and his wife Jane (née Handcock). He was educated at Ipswich Grammar School. He married Frances Augusta March, on 3 February 1875 in Sydney. The couple had 5 sons and 2 daughters. Politics His brother George Thorn had represented the seat of Fassifern in the Queensland Legislative Assembly until he resigned on 9 January 1874 to be appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council on that day. John Thorn won the resulting by-election in Fassifern on 24 January 1874. He held the seat until he resigned on 12 March 1878. Electoral District Of Fassifern
Fassifern was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1873 to 1992. It was based on the area south of Ipswich and stretched toward the New South Wales border, although in subsequent redistributions was reduced in size away from the growing Brisbane area. It was named after the Fassifern Valley. Fassifern was a safe Country/National district for most of its existence. It was abolished in the 1991 redistribution under the Goss government, and was largely replaced by the new district of Beaudesert. De Burgh Fitzpatrick Persse (25 September 1840 – 17 February 1921) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life De Burgh Fitzpatrick Persse was born on 25 September 1840 in Athenry, Moyode Castle, County Galway, Ireland. Politics Presse was the Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Electoral district of Fassifern, Fassifern from 9 April 1878 to 7 September 1883. Later life Persse died on 17 February 1921 in Southport, Queensland, Australia. He was buried in Beaudesert, Queensland, Beaudesert on the local cemetery. He left his wife and two sons, Charles Persse and De Burgh B. Persse. and three daughters, Mrs. Fitz Pierce Joyce, Mrs. Edgar Joyce and Mrs. Cecil Delpratt. North Coast Railway Line, Queensland
The North Coast railway line is a 1067 mm railway line in Queensland, Australia. It commences at Roma Street station, Brisbane, and largely parallels the Queensland coast to Cairns in Far North Queensland. The line is electrified between Brisbane and Rockhampton. Along the way, the 1680 km railway passes through the numerous towns and cities of eastern Queensland including Nambour, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville. The line though the centre of Rockhampton runs down the middle of Denison Street. Queensland Legislative Council
The Queensland Legislative Council was the upper house of the parliament in the Australian state of Queensland. It was a fully nominated body which first took office on 1 May 1860. It was abolished by the Constitution Amendment Act 1921, which took effect on 23 March 1922. Consequently, the Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the only unicameral state Parliament in Australia. Two territories, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, also maintain unicameral parliaments. Most of the early members of the Council came from wealthy families, were well educated and were born in England. Absenteeism was a problem in the early years, with some members returning to England, being absent for several years. Queensland Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s).
