William Sutton (VC)
William Sutton VC (1830 – 16 February 1888) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Details Sutton was about 27 years old, and a bugler in the 1st Battalion, 60th Rifles (later The King's Royal Rifle Corps), British Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place on 13 September 1857 at Delhi, India for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. There is a plaque in his memory in St Peter's Church, Ightham, where he is buried in an unmarked grave. William Sutton (born October 3, 1991) is a former American football defensive tackle. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played college football at Arizona State. As a member of the 2012 team, Sutton earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and a 2012 College Football All-America Team selection. In high school, he led the undefeated 2008 Centennial High School California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state championship football team in quarterback sacks. He is the son of Mickey Sutton. Early years As a sophomore at Centennial High School in Corona, California in 2006, he totaled 11 tackles for the high school football team. William Sutton (Southport)
William Sutton (1752 – 1840 in North Meols, Lancashire), also known as The Mad Duke or The Old Duke) was an entrepreneur from North Meols (North of Southport). In 1792, Sutton took advantage of the fashionable new trend of sea bathing by building a bathing house at South Hawes (2 miles kmsouth of Churchtown). Realizing the importance and opportunity presented by the newly created canal systems, he gambled on the idea of constructing a hotel by the seaside. His hotel was just 4 miles kmaway from the newly constructed Leeds and Liverpool Canal, to and from which he arranged transport for potential guests. Born in 1752, he was originally the landlord of the Black Bull Inn in Churchtown (now the Hesketh Arms) and known as a good-natured, jovial gentleman who entertained his regulars by playing the fiddle. William Alexander Sutton (1 March 1917 – 23 January 2000) was a New Zealand portrait and landscape artist. A graduate of the Canterbury College School of Art (now the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts) he returned there to teach for more than 30 years. He was tutored by many well-known Canterbury artists, including Colin Lovell-Smith, Evelyn Page and Archibald Nicoll and gained his Diploma of Fine Arts in 1937. In 1947 he travelled to London where he studied for a time at the Anglo-French centre in St John's Wood. On returning to New Zealand in 1949 he took up a teaching position at Canterbury University College School of Art and was appointed senior lecturer in 1959. During the 1940s and 1950s Sutton followed in the tradition of fellow Canterbury artists, such as Rita Angus, Colin and Rata Lovell-Smith and Louise Henderson, developing a distinctive interpretation of the Canterbury landscape. William Francis Sutton Jr. (June 30, 1901 – November 2, 1980) was an American bank robber. During his forty-year robbery career he stole an estimated $2 million, and he eventually spent more than half of his adult life in prison and escaped three times. For his talent at executing robberies in disguises, he gained two nicknames, "Willie the Actor" and "Slick Willie". Sutton is also known as the namesake of the so-called Sutton's law although he denied originating it. William Richard Sutton (1833 – 20 May 1900) was the founder of the UK's first door-to-door long distance parcel service and founder of the William Sutton housing trust. Early life William Richard Sutton was born in 1833 at London's Cheapside. Career Sutton founded the business of Sutton and Co., general carriers in 1861. He noted that the Royal Mail could carry letters from door to door, but they did not carry parcels; instead the sender had to arrange for delivery to a railway station, goods freight to a station near the destination, and then make separate arrangements for delivery to the final destination. Sutton Carriers would take care of all those stages. The railway companies obstructed this and Sutton took them to court with a case that lasted over seven years; the House of Lords ruled to break the railway companies' monopoly on pricing and allowed him to deliver packages door-to-door.
