William Smith (Oregon Politician)
William Smith was an American lawyer and politician who served as a Populist member of the Oregon Senate from 1899 until 1903. He was also the Fusion ( Democratic and Populist) nominee for Oregon's 2nd congressional district in 1900. Smith lost to incumbent Republican Malcolm A. Moody in a four-way race, receiving 32% of the vote. He practiced law with the firm Hart & Smith from 1904 until 1906. In April 1903, Smith was appointed to the Board of Regents of the University of Oregon by Governor George E. Chamberlain, and was still serving as late as 1915. Early life William Smith was born on April 22, 1854, in Brooklyn, New York. He was one of five children of William and Susan Davies (Thomas) Smith. Oregon State Senate
The Oregon State Senate is the upper house of the statewide legislature for the US state of Oregon. Along with the lower chamber Oregon House of Representatives it makes up the Oregon Legislative Assembly. There are 30 members of the state Senate, representing 30 districts across the state, each with a population of 127,700. The state Senate meets in the east wing of the Oregon State Capitol in Salem. Oregon state senators serve four-year terms without term limits. In 2002, the Oregon Supreme Court struck down the decade-old Oregon Ballot Measure 3, that had restricted state senators to two terms (eight years) on procedural grounds. Baker County, Oregon
Baker County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,668. The county seat and largest city is Baker City. The county was organized on September 22, 1862, when a portion of Wasco County was partitioned off. The new county's area was reduced in 1864 when Union County was partitioned off, and again in 1887 when Malheur County was partitioned off. The county's lines were last adjusted in 1901 when a parcel was added to the county. Baker County was named for Edward Dickinson Baker, a senator from Oregon who was killed at Ball's Bluff, a battle of the Civil War in Virginia in 1861. The county is part of the county definition of Eastern Oregon.
