William Niblo
William Niblo (1790–1878), also known as ''Billy Niblo'', was a prominent 19th-century theatre owner. He was the owner of Niblo's Garden. He was born in Ireland and emigrated to the United States at a young age. Arrival to the United States Niblo arrived from Ireland at a young age. He found work in David King's tavern on Wall Street at Sloat Lane. In 1813, Niblo took possession of the former mansion of Tory sympathizer Frederick Phillipse at Pine and William Streets. In 1814, he turned the mansion into a coffee house. The Bank Coffee House The Bank Coffee House was located at the rear of the Bank of New York, and lasted from 1812 to 1830. Adjoining it at the rear was a garden, and the building formerly occupied by the Bank of New York, the first banking institution established in the city. Niblo's Garden
Niblo's Garden was a theater on Broadway and Crosby Street, near Prince Street, in SoHo, Manhattan, New York City. It was established in 1823 as "Columbia Garden" which in 1828 gained the name of the ''Sans Souci'' and was later the property of the coffeehouse proprietor and caterer William Niblo. The large theater that evolved in several stages, occupying more and more of the pleasure ground, was twice burned and rebuilt. On September 12, 1866, Niblo's saw the premiere of ''The Black Crook'', considered to be the first piece of musical theater that conforms to the modern notion of a "book musical". Prince Street (BMT Broadway Line)
The Prince Street station is a local station on the BMT Broadway Line of the New York City Subway. Located in SoHo, Manhattan, it is served by the R train at all times except late nights, the W train on weekdays, the N train during late nights and weekends, and the Q train during late nights. The station opened in 1917, had its platforms extended in the late 1960s, and was renovated in the late 1970s and in 2001. History Prince Street opened on September 4, 1917, as part of the first section of the BMT Broadway Line from Canal Street to 14th Street–Union Square. The city government took over the BMT's operations on June 1, 1940. Green-Wood Cemetery is a cemetery in the western portion of Brooklyn, New York City. The cemetery is located between South Slope/ Greenwood Heights, Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Borough Park, Kensington, and Sunset Park, and lies several blocks southwest of Prospect Park. Its boundaries include, among other streets, 20th Street to the northeast, Fifth Avenue to the northwest, 36th and 37th Streets to the southwest, Fort Hamilton Parkway to the south, and McDonald Avenue to the east. Green-Wood Cemetery was founded in 1838 as a rural cemetery, in a time of rapid urbanization when churchyards in New York City were becoming overcrowded.
