William M. Tryon
Reverend William Milton Tryon (March 10, 1809 – November 16, 1847) was an American missionary, pastor, Baptist minister and co-founder of Baylor University. Together with some leading Baptist missionaries, Rev. James Huckins and Judge Robert Emmett Bledsoe Baylor, he inspired the formation of Christian education in Texas. Background At the age of 9, Tryon lost his father and was 17 year old when he was baptized. Together with his mother he moved to Georgia in 1823 and was given a licence to preach. He was a graduate of Mercer Institute and in 1836 he was ordained as minister; he was preacher in Alabama and led five churches. Tryon together with Robert E. B. Baylor University
Baylor University is a private Baptist Christian research university in Waco, Texas. Baylor was chartered in 1845 by the last Congress of the Republic of Texas. Baylor is the oldest continuously operating university in Texas and one of the first educational institutions west of the Mississippi River in the United States. James Huckins
Huckins James (April 8, 1807 — August 6, 1863) was an American ordained Baptist minister, the first Southern Baptist missionary of Texas, an educator, and a church organizer. Background James was an orphan who was born in Dorchester, New Hampshire and was adopted by a local farmer at the age of six. He was baptized at the age of fourteen. Education and career He attended Brown University and studied theology. In 1840 he was sent by the American Baptist Home Missionary Society to report on the conditions there. He organized one of the first Baptist churches in Galveston. He also established the first Baptist church in Houston and was editor of the Texas column in Baptist banner. He retired from the Home Missionary Society in 1845 and became a member of the Domestic Mission Board of Southern Baptist Convention due to issues of slavery. Texas Senate
The Texas Senate ( es, Senado de Texas) is the upper house of the Texas State Legislature. There are 31 members of the Senate, representing single-member districts across the U.S. state of Texas, with populations of approximately 806,000 per constituency, based on the 2010 U.S. Census. There are no term limits, and each term is four years long. Elections are held in even-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. In elections in years ending in 2, all seats are up for election. Half of the senators will serve a two-year term, based on a drawing; the other half will fill regular four-year terms. In the case of the latter, they or their successors will be up for two-year terms in the next year that ends in 0. As such, in other elections, about half of the Texas Senate is on the ballot.
