Cumberland is a former United Kingdom Parliamentary constituency. It was a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of England then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832. Appleby was a United Kingdom constituencies, parliamentary constituency in the county of Westmorland in England. It existed for two separate periods: from 1295 to 1832, and from 1885 to 1918. Appleby was enfranchised as parliamentary borough in 1295, and abolished by the Great Reform Act of 1832. It returned two Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Members of Parliament (MPs) using the Plurality-at-large voting, bloc vote system. William Lowther (died 1688)
Sir William Lowther (c. 1612 – February 1688) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1660 to 1679. Life Lowther was the son of Sir John Lowther of Lowther Hall and his wife Eleanor Fleming, daughter of Wiliam Fleming of Rydal. In 1660, he was elected Member of Parliament for Pontefract in the Convention Parliament He was re-elected MP for Pontefract in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. He was knighted on 30 December 1661 and was dwelling at Swillington. Family Lowther married Jane Busfield daughter of William Busfield, merchant of Leeds, Yorkshire, by 1636. William Lowther (1639–1705)
Sir William Lowther (18 August 1639 – 7 December 1705) was an English landowner and MP. He was the eldest son of Sir William Lowther of Swillington, near Leeds and educated at Gray's Inn and Balliol College, Oxford. He succeeded his father in 1688 and was knighted the same year. He was appointed High Sheriff of Yorkshire for 1681. He was commissioner for the Aire and Calder Navigation in 1699 and elected Member of Parliament for Pontefract in 1695, sitting until 1698. He died at Little Preston Hall near Leeds in 1705 and was buried at Kippax. Sir William Lowther, 3rd Baronet (1727 – 15 April 1756) was an English landowner, of Marske Hall, Yorkshire and Holker Hall. He was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Lowther, 2nd Baronet and Lady Elizabeth Cavendish. In January 1755, he inherited the Whitehaven estates and coal mines from his fourth cousin once removed, Sir James Lowther, 4th Baronet, and succeeded him as Member of Parliament for Cumberland. However, he died unmarried in 1756, last of his line. He left the bulk of his estates, including the Whitehaven inheritance, to his fourth cousin, James Lowther.
