William Lisowsky
William Lisowsky (January 1, 1892 – 1958) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1936 to 1941, as a representative of the Social Credit League. The son of Nicolas Lisowsky and Lubow Stepanenko, Lisowsky was born in Kaney, Ukraine, and came to Canada in 1910. He was educated in Brandon and Winnipeg, and worked as a public school teacher. He was elected to the Manitoba legislature in the 1936 provincial election, defeating Liberal-Progressive incumbent Nicholas Hryhorczuk by 226 votes. Voters elected only five Social Credit party five candidates in this election, but it played a significant role in the subsequent parliament by supporting John Bracken's minority Liberal-Progressive government. John Bracken
John Bracken (June 22, 1883 – March 18, 1969) was a Canadian agronomist and politician who was the 11th and longest-serving premier of Manitoba (1922–1943) and later the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada (1942–1948). Bracken was born in Ontario, and was a professor of animal husbandry at the University of Saskatchewan before moving to Manitoba in 1920. A political outsider, he was named leader of the Progressive Party of Manitoba following its upset victory in the 1922 Manitoba general election. During his tenure as premier of Manitoba, he implemented independent, non-partisan policies dominated by rural interests and opposed organized labour. He oversaw the creation of a universal pension, the provincial income tax, and reductions in spending on health, education and welfare as well as the replacement of the first past the post voting system with alternative voting. 1941 Manitoba General Election
The 1941 Manitoba general election was held on April 22, 1941 to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. This election was held shortly after the formation of a coalition government in December 1940. The coalition was created after the start of World War II, as a display of unity among the different parties in the legislature. Premier John Bracken's Liberal-Progressives were the dominant force in government, while the Conservative Party under Errick Willis held a secondary position. The smaller Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and Social Credit League were also included in the government, and had cabinet representation. The four coalition parties were the only legal political parties in Manitoba in 1941. The Communist Party had been declared illegal the previous year. Nicholas Hryhorczuk
Nicholas Apoluner Hryhorczuk (December 17, 1888 – November 23, 1979) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1920 to 1936, and again from 1941 to 1945. He was the first person of Ukrainian descent to serve as an MLA in Manitoba. Born in Buchachky (now in Kolomyia Raion, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast), then in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hryhorczuk came to Canada in 1897 with his family, who settled north of Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. He was educated at Kolomyja Public School. In 1911, he moved to Ethelbert, where he worked as a merchant. Hryhorczuk married Nelly Dzaman in 1905. From 1917 to 1919, he served as reeve of Ethelbert municipality., Hryhorczuk was a member of the Canadian Foresters.
