William L. Nelson (politician)
William Lester Nelson (August 4, 1875 – December 31, 1946) was an American farmer and politician from Columbia, Missouri. He represented Missouri as a Democrat in the United States House of Representatives for several terms: 1919–1921, 1925–1933 and 1935–1943. Biography Nelson was born on a farm near Bunceton, Missouri on August 4, 1875. He attended the local schools, the Hooper Institute in Clarksburg, Missouri, William Jewell College, and the Missouri College of Agriculture. He taught school for five years and then became involved with his brothers in operating and editing a county newspaper in Bunceton. A Democrat, he served in the Missouri House of Representatives from 1901 to 1903 and 1905 to 1907. Nelson moved to Columbia, Missouri to accept appointment as Assistant Secretary of the State Board of Agriculture, a position he held from 1908 to 1918. 76th United States Congress
The 76th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, DC from January 3, 1939, to January 3, 1941, during the seventh and eighth years of Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency. The apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the Fifteenth Census of the United States in 1930. Both chambers had a Democratic majority - holding a supermajority in the Senate, but a greatly reduced majority in the House, thus losing the supermajority there. Clyde Williams (October 13, 1873 – November 12, 1954) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri. Born on a farm near Grubville, Missouri, Williams attended the county schools, De Soto High School, and the State normal school at Cape Girardeau. He was graduated from the law department of the University of Missouri in 1901. He was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in De Soto, Missouri. He served as prosecuting attorney of Jefferson County in 1902–1908. Williams was elected as a Democrat to the Seventieth Congress (March 4, 1927 – March 3, 1929). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1928 to the Seventy-first Congress. He resumed the practice of law.
