William John Cameron
William John Cameron (1907–1990) was a Scottish minister. He twice served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland: in 1962 and 1977.Annals of the Free Church of Scotland 1956 Life He was born in Brora, Sutherland in November 1907 the son of Rev Kenneth Cameron. The family moved first to Skye then to Stornoway with his father's role as minister. He was educated at the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway, where he was school dux.Herald (Scottish newspaper) 29 January 1990 He studied Classics and Divinity at the University of Edinburgh and graduated with an MA with Honours. During this period (in 1924/25) his father served as Moderator of the General Assembly. He was ordained at Burghead on the Moray coast in 1932 and in 1950 moved to the famous Buccleuch Greyfriars Church in Edinburgh's South Side. Moderator Of The General Assembly
The moderator of the General Assembly is the chairperson of a General Assembly, the highest court of a Presbyterian or Reformed church. Kirk sessions and presbyteries may also style the chairperson as moderator. The Oxford Dictionary states that a Moderator may be a "Presbyterian minister presiding over an ecclesiastical body". Presbyterian churches are ordered by a presbyterian polity, including a hierarchy of councils or courts of elders, from the local church (kirk) Session through presbyteries (and perhaps synods) to a General Assembly. The moderator presides over the meeting of the court, much as a convener presides over the meeting of a church committee.
