William Hood (politician)
William Walter Hood (25 March 1844 – 18 August 1920) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Hood was born in Berwick, Scotland, the son of Robert Hood and his wife Margaret (née Weatherly). Upon his arrival in Australia he was educated at the Geelong Grammar School and after receiving commercial experience in Melbourne he set out to Queensland in 1863. Here he first worked at several stations before becoming the general manager of the Queensland Pastoral Company in 1880 and a company director of the Queensland Cattle Company, the Queensland Investment Company, and the West Qld Pastoralists' Company. Electoral District Of Warrego
Warrego is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate lies in the extreme southwest of Queensland, running along the western part of the border with New South Wales. It includes the large town of Dalby, as well as the rural centres of Surat, Roma, Tara, Charleville, Augathella, St George and Cunnamulla. History The electoral district of Warrego was created by the ''Additional Members Act of 1864'' which introduced six new single-member electorates. A by-election was held to fill the seat. The nomination date was 18 March 1865 and the election was held on 25 March 1865. Warrego was, as with the rest of the state, held by independents and loose groupings of members around the government of the day until the first years of the twentieth century, when the partisan system took hold. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. A Workers' Political Reform Association was founded to nominate candidates for the 1888 election, at which the Brisbane Trades and Labor Council endorsed six candidates. The Queensland Government is the democratic administrative authority of the Australian state of Queensland. In Australia, a station is a large landholding used for producing livestock, predominantly cattle or sheep, that needs an extensive range of grazing land.
