William Grills Knight
William Grills Knight (23 January 1839 3 May 1903) was a prominent businessman and politician who served as the Mayor of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Knight was born 23 January 1839 in Fremantle, Western Australia to Stephen Henry Knight, a postmaster who had arrived on ''Parmelia'' in 1829 as one of the first settlers. The family moved to Albany the following year. He married Ann Augusta McKail and together they had four children. In 1865 Knight was working as a farmer and grazier at ''Woodlands'', a farm owned by John McKail, in the Porongurups. The Rocks, an iconic building in Albany, was built by Grills in 1882 as his residence. The building, now used as an exclusive hotel, is heritage listed. First elected in 1876 Knight then served as chairman from 1877 to 1879. Knight remained on the council and was elected as Mayor of Albany in 1886. Memorial Park Cemetery also known as Pioneer Cemetery and Old Albany Cemetery is a cemetery located along Middleton Road in the city of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It was constructed in 1836 and is the first consecrated cemetery in Western Australia, gazetted in 1840 as a public burial ground to provide for the needs of a growing community. It was closed as a public cemetery in 1959, with a few burials being held there until 2000 and ashes placed there until 2009. Most burials now being held at Allambie Park Cemetery. It is thought to be the longest serving public cemetery in Western Australia. ''The Inquirer & Commercial News'' was a newspaper published in Perth, Western Australia from 1855 to 1901. In May 1847, Edmund Stirling acquired ''The Inquirer'' from Francis Lochée, who established the paper in August 1840 together with William Tanner. Tanner disposed of his interest in the paper in June 1843. In July 1855, ''The Inquirer'' merged with ''The Commercial News and Shipping Gazette'', which was owned by Robert John Sholl, to form ''The Inquirer & Commercial News'', in the joint ownership of Sholl and Stirling. Stirling's eldest son John joined the paper around 1863 and operated the paper with his father when Sholl left. Lancel Victor De Hamel
Lancel Victor de Hamel (10 September 1849 – 25 November 1894) was a publisher, solicitor and politician who represented the people of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Early life De Hamel was born on 10 September 1849 in London. His father, Felix John de Hamel, was a solicitor in Stoke Newington, London. Lancel followed in his footsteps and after completing his training worked as a solicitor for the Board of Trade, at Newcastle upon Tyne. He was actively involved in local politics as a conservative and a captain of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. He married Marion Eugenie de Manuel Hammond in 1877 in Northumberland and in the 1880s de Hamel embarked on an unsuccessful expedition to find buried treasure on a pacific island. Albany Town Hall is a public building on York Street in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It was the first civic building constructed in the town. Description The town hall is a two storied building with a stone exterior and four-faced clock tower. It is situated on the corner of Grey Street West and York Street in the centre of Albany. The hall has gallery space on the lower floor with a 310-seat theatre on the upper floor. The building is an example of Victorian Free Classical architecture and was designed by an Adelaide firm, Henderson, Marriot and Company, in 1886. It is constructed from locally quarried granite masonry and finished with stucco ornamentation externally and plastered brickwork internally. The hall has a ground floor, first floor and gallery level along with other levels within the clock tower.
