William Grefé
William Grefé (born 1930) is an American writer and director of films, best known for his work in the exploitation field. For most of his career he has worked in Florida. He also worked for a number of years with Ivan Tors. In 2009 a documentary was released about his work called ''From the Swamp: The Films of William Grefe''. In 2020 a four-disc Blu-ray collection ''He Came from the Swamp: The William Grefé Collection'' will be released by Arrow Video. Exploitation Film
An exploitation film is a film that tries to succeed financially by exploiting current trends, niche genres, or lurid content. Exploitation films are generally low-quality "B movies", though some set trends, attract critical attention, become historically important, and even gain a cult following. History Exploitation films may feature suggestive or explicit sex, sensational violence, drug use, nudity, gore, destruction, rebellion, mayhem, and the bizarre. Such films were first seen in their modern form in the early 1920s, but they were popularized in the 60s and 70s with the general relaxing of censorship and cinematic taboos in the U.S. and Europe. An early example, the 1933 film Ecstasy, included nude scenes featuring the Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr. It was directed by William Grefé, although he was uncredited, and written by Terry Merrill. It stars John Darrell, Carolyn Hall, James Coleman, and Joe Crane. Its plot follows a group of young people stalked by a gang of unhinged backwoods drug dealers while on a treasure hunt in the wilderness. They intend to search the region for a number of antique Civil War rifles, which Diana has a familial connection to, having ancestors from the region. ''Stanley'' is a 1972 American horror film directed and produced by William Grefé, about a Seminole Indian and a Vietnam veteran who uses his collection of pet snakes to take revenge on his enemies. Production Director William Grefé pitched the film to Crown International's head Red Jacobs after the success of the film ''Willard (1971 film), Willard'' (1971). Grefe stated in March 1972 that he got the idea of the film after having a nightmare about snakes. The film was shot entirely in the Evergaldes and Ivan Tors Studios in Miami, Florida. Ivan Tors
Ivan Tors (born Iván Törzs; June 12, 1916 – June 4, 1983) was a Hungarian playwright, film director, screenwriter, and film and television producer with an emphasis on non-violent but exciting science fiction, underwater sequences, and stories involving animals. He started a Miami-based film studio now known as Greenwich Studios, and later a music company. Biography Tors was born to a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary. He wrote several plays in his native country before moving to the United States just prior to World War II. He arrived with his brother Ervin in July 1939 on the SS ''Hansa'' and had come to study at Fordham University in New York City.
