William Egan (footballer)
Thomas William Egan (1872–1946) was a Welsh professional association footballer who played as an inside forward. Egan played in the Football League for Ardwick, Burnley, Sheffield United and Lincoln City. He was awarded one cap for the Wales national football team for the match against Scotland on 26 March 1892. He started his career with his local side, Chirk F.C. as a teenager and graduated to the first team in 1891. Shortly afterwards, he moved to Manchester to join Fairfield. In the summer of 1893, he joined Ardwick before moving on to Burnley. After a month with Ashton North End in May 1895, he joined Sheffield United in November, where he replaced his former Chirk team-mate, Joe Davies. Described as a "tricky player" who had a "fine shot at goal", Egan could play in any of the forward positions. After a season in Sheffield, in which he scored four goals from 15 league appearances, Egan moved on to Lincoln City before dropping into non-League football in 1897. After ... Chirk ( cy, Y Waun) is a town and community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales, south of Wrexham, between it and Oswestry. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 4,468. Historically in the traditional county of Denbighshire, and later Clwyd, it has been part of Wrexham County Borough since a local government reorganisation in 1996. The border with the English county of Shropshire is immediately south of the town, on the other side of the River Ceiriog. The town is served by Chirk railway station and the A5/A483 roads. Etymology The name of the town in English, Chirk, derives from the name of the River Ceiriog, which itself may mean "the favoured one". The Welsh place name, ', is literarally "The Moor". Joseph Davies (born 1870; date of death unknown) was a Welsh international footballer who played as an inside right. Career Early career Born in Chirk in Wales, Davies worked as a miner whilst playing for his hometown club of Chirk. Everton & league debut Joe Davies made his League Debut on 1 December 1888 at Anfield, Liverpool against West Bromwich Albion. Davies was at outside-right. The first half was pretty much one-way traffic and although Everton had some attacks West Bromwich Albion dominated putting three past Everton goalkeeper Robert Smalley before half-time.
