William Cole (public Servant)
Sir Robert William Cole (16 September 1926 – 8 January 2019) was a senior Australian public servant. He held secretary-level positions in four departments or agencies during the Fraser government and Hawke government years. Background Cole was born in 1926 in Melbourne. His parents were James Cole and Rita Tassie. He had two younger siblings, Geoff and Barbara. He attended Northcote High School but left school in 1941. He began his public-service career at the age of 15 as a telegraph messenger. In 1944, he was conscripted in and served in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) during World War II ending in service's postal division. After being demobilised, he returned to his previous work at the Department of Supply in Melbourne. Australian Statistician
The Australian Statistician is the head of the Australian Bureau of Statistics. On 18 June 1906, the first ''Statistician of the Commonwealth of Australia'' was appointed to carry out the provisions of the ''Census and Statistics Act 1905''. Later in the same year the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics was formed (renamed the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 1975). Peter Wilenski
Peter Stephen Wilenski, (10 May 1939 – 3 November 1994) was a senior Australian public servant and ambassador. He was a champion of women's rights and equal opportunity. Early life Peter Wilenski was born in Łódź, Poland on 10 May 1939. He came to Australia in 1943 as a Jewish refugee, due to World War II conflict and persecution of Jewish people in his home country. His family spent time in a Soviet internment camp before coming to Australia. For high school education, he attended Sydney Boys High School. He later studied at the University of Sydney where he met his first wife, Gail Radford, when both were student politicians. Career Wilenski entered the Australian Public Service as a Foreign Affairs Officer (1967–71). Mick Shann
Sir Keith Charles Owen "Mick" Shann (22 November 1917 – 4 August 1988) was a senior Australian public servant and diplomat. Life and career Mick Shann was born in the Melbourne suburb of Kew, Victoria, on 22 November 1917. His father was Frank Shann, a respected teacher and headmaster. He studied arts at the University of Melbourne, where he was in residence at Trinity College from 1936 to 1936, winning the Alcock Scholarship. Shann's first Commonwealth Public Service positions were at the Bureau of Census and Statistics in 1939 and the Department of Labour and National Service from 1940 to 1946. In 1946, he moved to the Department of External Affairs in Canberra to take up an appointment as second secretary of the United Nations Division in the department. Roy Cameron (statistician)
Roy James Cameron (11 March 19233 October 2006) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. He was the Australian Statistician from 1977 to 1985. Life and career Cameron was born in Port Pirie, South Australia on 11 March 1923. He studied at the University of Adelaide, graduating with first class honours from a Bachelor of Economics course in 1948. He graduated a Master of Economics from the university in 1951, with the topic "Standard hours and the basic wage: an analysis of two aspects of the work of the Commonwealth Court of Conciliation and Arbitration." He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study for his doctorate at Harvard University, starting in 1951. He completed his PhD in 1956. John Patrick O'Neill (1910 – 11 October 1998) was an Australian public servant, who served as Australia's Commonwealth Statistician (head of the Bureau of Statistics) from 1970 to 1975, and Australian Statistician from 1975 to 1976. O'Neill was born in Wynyard, Tasmania where he attended primary school, later boarding at St Virgil's College in Hobart.
