William Bradley (Australian Politician)
William James Bradley (12 April 1881 – 1 July 1957) was an Australian politician. He was born in Alexandria to builder Michael Bradley and Bridget Clerkins. He attended school locally and became a clerk with the Crown Solicitors' Office from 1917 to 1918; he was also studying part-time at the University of Sydney, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1915 and a Bachelor of Law in 1919, in which year he was called to the bar, where he focused on commercial and industrial law. On 25 January 1922 he married Coralie Viola Moloney (née Goold). From 1912 to 1942 he served in the Australian Military Forces, in later years being part of the Army Legal Corps. King's Counsel from 1934, he was a member of Sydney City Council from 1937 to 1948. From 1940 to 1949 he was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council, representing first the United Australia Party and then the Liberal Party. The Liberal Party of Australia (New South Wales Division), commonly known as the New South Wales Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. The party currently governs in New South Wales in coalition with the National Party of Australia (NSW). The party is part of the federal Liberal Party which is in opposition nationally. Following the Liberal Party's formation in October 1944, the NSW division of the Liberal Party was formed in January 1945. For the following months, the Democratic Party and Liberal Democratic Party joined the Liberal Party and were replaced by the new party's NSW division. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition.
