William Affleck
William Affleck (5 March 1836 – 6 March 1923) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in West Wemyss in Fifeshire, Scotland; his father was storekeeper Arthur Affleck, while his mother's name is unknown. He received a primary education before being apprenticed as a confectioner, and later at a warehouse. He arrived in New South Wales in 1855 and settled at Gundaroo, where he and his father worked as storekeepers. In August 1865 he married Catherine Campbell Cameron, with whom he had two sons; his second marriage, on 17 June 1880, was to Isabella Anderson. In 1894 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Free Trade member for Yass; he served until his defeat in 1904. Gundaroo is a small village in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia and in Yass Valley Council. It is situated to the east of the Yass River, about north of Sutton, about west of the Lake George range. At the , Gundaroo "state suburb" (including surrounding areas) had a population of 1,146. Free Trade Party
The Free Trade Party which was officially known as the Australian Free Trade and Liberal Association, also referred to as the Revenue Tariff Party in some states, was an Australian political party, formally organised in 1887 in New South Wales, in time for the 1887 colony election, which the party won. It advocated the abolition of protectionism, especially protective tariffs and other restrictions on trade, arguing that this would create greater prosperity for all. However, many members also advocated use of minimal tariffs for government revenue purposes only. Its most prominent leader was George Reid, who led the Reid Government as the fourth Prime Minister of Australia (1904–05). Thomas Colls
Thomas Colls (1822 – 2 March 1898) was a politician and hotelier in New South Wales. He was born in Liverpool to Thomas Colls and Sarah Perkins. He attended a boarding school near Campbelltown before being apprenticed to a wheelwright. In 1847 he moved to Yass, working as a wheelwright, blacksmith and farrier. He became a hotelier in 1848, retiring in 1873. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Clegg in 1842 and produced ten children; the second was to Minnie Linsley in 1894. In around 1874 Colls was elected a Yass alderman and was elected Mayor of Yass in December 1874, re-elected in 1875. He continued to serve as an alderman until 1897. serving four times as mayor. Niels Nielsen (Australian Politician)
Niels Rasmus Wilson Nielsen (2 March 1869 – 1 July 1930) was a Danish-born politician and union official in New South Wales, Australia. Life and career He was born in Copenhagen to Niels Peter Nielsen and Susan Wilson. He arrived in Australia around 1874, becoming a carpenter and farmer near Young and a local officer of the Australian Workers' Union. Around 1888 he married Marie Booth in Yass; they had three daughters and three sons. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Boorowa at the 1899 by-election. Boorowa was abolished in the 1904 re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90, and was largely absorbed by Yass, with the balance going to the new district of Burrangong.
