William Adey
William James Adey CMG (27 May 1874 – 23 May 1956) was an Australian educationist and public servant. Early life and education Adey was born near Clare in South Australia to farmer Charles George Adey and Ann, ''née'' Ritchie. He attended state primary schools before studying at Grote Street Training College in 1894 and at Melbourne Training College in 1907; he also studied part-time at the University of Adelaide (1909–15), although he never graduated. Career He worked as a primary school teacher from 1895 to 1909 in various schools. In 1909 Adey was appointed inaugural headmaster of Adelaide High School, a position he held until 1919. He was inspector of high schools from 1919 to 1920 before becoming superintendent of secondary education. In 1929 he became director of education, although he was the second choice and was instructed to limit himself to following his predecessor's plan; not a reformer, he followed this directive, but his administrative and teaching ... Burnside, South Australia
Burnside is suburb in the City of Burnside council area in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide. It is primarily a residential suburb. It was named Burnside, an amalgamation of the Scottish word for creek, "burn" and "side" because of the original property's location on the side of River Torrens#Tributaries, Second Creek. Burnside is east of the Adelaide city centre by road. Description Burnside was established and named by Peter Anderson and his family who emigrated from Scotland in 1839. Anderson started a large farm on leased land near Second Creek. The farm had a large number of animals including pigs, poultry and cattle as well as barley and wheat crops. In 1848, the lease was assigned to William Randall (dairyman), William Randall who arranged for the town to be laid out around Second Creek. By the 1870s the area had developed into a small village. Walkerville, South Australia
Walkerville is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It lies just north east of the city centre, about from the Adelaide GPO. Walkerville is one of South Australia's most affluent suburbs and in 2012 it was South Australia's second "top earning suburb." History Walkerville was named after Captain John Walker R. N. (no relation to Captain Johnnie Walker), who took up land in the district in 1838, two years after the first colonists arrived in South Australia. The area was attractive to early settlers and within a few years, the settlement had become a village. During the 1840s, Walker fell victim to over-speculation in land value and a statewide financial depression. He was imprisoned briefly for debt and in 1849 he left the colony to take up a government position in Hobart. His connection with the state, although brief, is remembered in the naming of the suburb.
