Willem Molkenboer
Wilhelmus Bernardus Gerardus Molkenboer, known as Willem (8 June 1844, Leiden - 9 December 1915, Amsterdam) was a Dutch sculptor and art educator. Life and work He was born to Theodorus Molkenboer (1801-1872), a baker, and his wife, Euphemia née Halderiet (1804-1880). As their only son, it was originally intended that he should take over the family business. At the age of fourteen, however, he began a five-year apprenticeship in the workshops of the sculptor, ;, a good friend of his father's cousin, an architect, who was also named . During those years, he also attended night classes at the Royal Academy of Arts and Design ('s-Hertogenbosch), Royal Academy of Arts and Design. In 1863, after completing his apprenticeship, he set out on the traditional "Wanderjahre". His first stop was Cologne, where he acquired some knowledge of woodworking. Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont (Adelheid Emma Wilhelmina Theresia; 2 August 1858 – 20 March 1934) was Queen of the Netherlands and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg as the wife of King-Grand Duke William III. Relief
Relief is a sculptural method in which the sculpted pieces are bonded to a solid background of the same material. The term ''relief'' is from the Latin verb ''relevo'', to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. When a relief is carved into a flat surface of stone (relief sculpture) or wood (relief carving), the field is actually lowered, leaving the unsculpted areas seeming higher. The approach requires a lot of chiselling away of the background, which takes a long time. On the other hand, a relief saves forming the rear of a subject, and is less fragile and more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round, especially one of a standing figure where the ankles are a potential weak point, particularly in stone. Prince Henry Of The Netherlands (1820–1879)
Prince William Frederick Henry of the Netherlands (Dutch: Willem Frederik Hendrik; 13 June 1820 – 13 January 1879) was the third son of King William II of the Netherlands and his wife, Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna of Russia. He was born at Soestdijk Palace. Prince Henry became Governor of Luxembourg in 1850, in which capacity he served until his death in 1879. During his tenure, he worked with the government to launch the reactionary Coup of 1856, which consolidated power in the monarchy and the executive. However, most of the changes were reversed by the new constitution issued in 1868 after the 1867 Luxembourg Crisis, during which the crown tried to sell the grand duchy to France.
