Willard Manus
Willard Manus (born September 28, 1930, died January 19, 2023) was a Los Angeles-based novelist, playwright, and journalist. His best known book is ''Mott the Hoople (novel), Mott the Hoople'' (1966), the novel from which the British 1970s Mott the Hoople, hard rock band derived their name. Manus was born in New York. He is the author of ''This Way to Paradise: Dancing on the Tables'', a memoir of life in Lindos, Rhodes, Greece, from the 1960s to the 1990s. Additionally he has had a dozen other books published, most recently a young adult novel, ''A Dog Called Leka'', which deals with a young lad sailing the Aegean islands in the company of an exceptional dog. More than two dozen of his plays have been produced in Los Angeles, regionally and in Europe. Member of Los Angeles Film Critics Association since 1981. Mott The Hoople (novel)
''Mott the Hoople'' is a 1966 novel by Willard Manus, and is best remembered as providing the name for Mott the Hoople, a British rock group of the 1970s. Overview "Hoople", a coinage of the author, refers to Square (slang), Squares, conventional people – those who "make the whole game possible, Christmas club, Christmas Clubs especially, politics, advertising agencies, pay toilets, even popes and mystery novels"." Protagonist Norman Mott is not a Hoople, and has various adventures in the comic novel, which is a contemporary commentary on religion, war and peace, the South, race, and so forth. Mott The Hoople
Mott the Hoople were an English rock band formed in Herefordshire. Originally known as the Doc Thomas Group, the group changed their name after signing with Island Records in 1969. The band released albums throughout the early 1970s but failed to find commercial success. On the verge of breaking up, the band were encouraged by David Bowie to stay together. Bowie wrote the glam rock song "All the Young Dudes" for them, which became a huge commercial success in 1972. Bowie subsequently produced an album of the same name for them, which continued their success. Despite personnel changes, the band had further commercial success with ''Mott'' (1973) and ''The Hoople'' (1974). Lead singer Ian Hunter departed the band in 1974, after which the band's commercial fortunes began to dwindle. They remained together with continuing personnel changes until their break-up in 1980.
