William Clarke (born 31 January 1985 in Cambridge, England, Great Britain) is a professional triathlete, World and European U23 triathlon champion 2006, Beijing Olympian and British National Champion 2008 and 2009. A triathlon is an endurance multisport race consisting of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall completion time, racing each segment sequentially with the time transitioning between the disciplines included. The word is of Greek origin, from τρεῖς or ''treis'' (three) and ἆθλος or ''athlos'' (competition). The sport originated in the late 1970s in Southern California as sports clubs and individuals developed the sport. This history has meant that variations of the sport were created and still exist. The Triathlon competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics, in Beijing, were held on Monday, August 18 (women) and Tuesday, August 19 (men), on the Triathlon Venue at the Ming Tomb Reservoir in Shisanling. Each competitor started the event with a swim course, followed by a road bicycle race and finished with a road run.
