Wichita Northeast Magnet High School
Northeast Magnet High School, known locally as Northeast, is a public magnet high school in Bel Aire, Kansas, United States. It is operated by Wichita USD 259 school district. Northeast Magnet High School was the first magnet high school in Kansas. The magnet areas at Northeast include visual arts, science, and law. Students are also exposed to mathematics and language arts. Since it is a pure (non-neighborhood) magnet school, there is no district boundary placed by the school district, meaning any high school age student within the Wichita district limits, can attend the school without requiring a special transfer, they still, however, are required to apply for the school, then students are selected at random to attend. Bel Aire, Kansas
Bel Aire is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States, and a suburb of Wichita. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 8,262. History Bel Aire was founded in January 1955 when a group of local residents petitioned the county government to create it as an improvement district for water. On November 26, 1980, Bel Aire formally incorporated as a city. This was despite a two-year legal dispute with the Wichita city government over whether or not it had the right to do so. The case ultimately went to the Kansas Supreme Court which ruled in Bel Aire's favor. Geography Bel Aire is located at (37.763758, −97.266177) at an elevation of 1,394 feet (425 m). Lake Afton
Lake Afton is a man-made recreational lake in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States, and within the Lake Afton Park. It is located east of the intersection of Viola Rd (263rd St W) and MacArthur Rd (39th St S), between the communities of Goddard, Garden Plain, Schulte, Viola. History Ground breaking for the dam occurred on December 29, 1939. The dam was built by Works Progress Administration workers from 1939 to 1941. It opened to the public in 1945. The Sedgwick County Commission let a contract for the construction of the Segwick County Boys Detention Home within the Park in April 1960. Lake Afton Public Observatory was constructed within the Park in the late 1970s on the north side of MacArthur Rd. Newman University is a private Roman Catholic university in Wichita, Kansas. It is named for John Henry Newman and was founded by the Adorers of the Blood of Christ in 1933. History The college was founded in 1933 by the Adorers of the Blood of Christ as Sacred Heart Junior College. Courses were offered for women only, initially offering degrees in home economics, nursing, teaching, and secretarial science. In 1950, the college becomes a four-year institution and renamed to Sacred Heart College. The college added more facilities and courses during the 1950s and began accepting male students on a limited basis in 1958 in evenings and summer.
