Whitney Laiho
Whitney Laiho-Biles (born May 8, 1980) is an American former tennis player. Biography A right-handed player from Rhode Island, Laiho attended Middletown High School and was a top 50 ranked ITF junior. She made the girls' singles quarter-finals of the 1997 US Open. Her first professional title came at the Baltimore USTA satellite in 1999, which she secured by beating Vilmarie Castellvi in the final. Laiho was a five-time All-American tennis player for the University of Florida and most notably partnered with Jessica Lehnhoff to win the 2001 NCAA Division I women's doubles championship. As the reigning NCAA doubles champions, Laiho and Lehnhoff earned a wildcard into the women's doubles main draw of the 2001 US Open. Julie Halard-Decugis and Ai Sugiyama were the defending champions, but did not compete this year. Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs won the title, defeating Kimberly Po-Messerli and Nathalie Tauziat 6–2, 5–7, 7–5 in the final. The Florida Gators are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the University of Florida, located in Gainesville. The University of Florida, its athletic program, its alumni and its sports fans are often collectively referred to as the "Gator Nation." Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. Jessica Lehnhoff (born 15 March 1980) is a Guatemalan born former professional tennis player from the United States. Biography Lehnhoff grew up in Guatemala City, the youngest in a family of four siblings, who moved to Florida when she was aged 11. She holds citizenship in 3 countries (Sweden, Guatemala & USA).
