Whitfield Winsey
Whitfield Winsey (September 1847-July 6, 1919), was the first African American doctor admitted to the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland. Winsey was born to William H. and Malvina Gibbs Winsey of Baltimore. The Winseys were a free African American family and William Winsey earned enough money as a brickmaker to provide a private education for his son, Whitfield. Beginning in 1867, Winsey was mentored by Dr. John Richard Woodcock Dunbar, who was vice-president of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland and was influential in the medical community. In 1871, Winsey graduated from Harvard Medical School, where he was taught by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.; he would return to East Baltimore and establish his medical practice in his home. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (; August 29, 1809 – October 7, 1894) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. Grouped among the fireside poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with ''The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table'' (1858). He was also an important medical reformer. In addition to his work as an author and poet, Holmes also served as a physician, professor, lecturer, inventor, and, although he never practiced it, he received formal training in law. Provident Hospital (Baltimore)
Provident Hospital began as a 10-bed clinic in a private residence at 419 Orchard St, in northwest Baltimore, Maryland in 1894 to provide both medical treatment and training for Black nurses and doctors. The hospital was founded by Negro physicians who were practicing in the Baltimore area just a year after the founding of the first Black-owned and operated hospital, Provident Hospital of Chicago. Within two years it moved to a larger site at 413 W. Biddle Street. Provident Hospital was one of the first black medical facilities located in Baltimore.
