White Dominican (Dominica)
White Dominicans or European Dominicans, are Dominicans whose ancestry lies within the continent of Europe. As of 2013, people of solely European descent are a small minority in the Commonwealth of Dominica, comprising only 0.8% of the population. Most White Dominicans are descendants of European settlers of French and English stock. History Christopher Columbus landed in Dominica in November 1493. Spanish ships frequently landed on Dominica during the 16th century, but fierce resistance by the indigenous Caribs discouraged Spain’s efforts at settlement in the island. English Language
English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, with its earliest forms spoken by the inhabitants of early medieval England. Afro-Dominican (Dominica)
Afro-Dominicans are Dominicans of African descent and the majority of the Commonwealth of Dominica's population. Origins Africans were initially brought to Dominica through the slave trade. Colonial records indicate multiple countries of origin for the slaves. The records contain data on slave ship ports of embarkation, often the ethnic group of the slaves, the date of arrival in Dominica, the number of enslaved people on board and survival rates, and the boat's name. Based on these records, the majority of African slaves came from the Bight of Biafra, of present-day south-eastern Nigeria (Igbo, Ibibio) and coastal Cameroon, comprising 62% of the 57,000 slaves imported to Dominica. Stephen Kirwan "Steve" Agar (born 6 June 1968 in Saint George Parish, Dominica, Saint George) is a retired track and field athlete who competed for Dominica and later Canada. Angelica Di Silvestri
Angelica Morrone di Silvestri (born 25 November 1965) is a cross-country skier who competed for Dominica at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the cross-country skiing race. She and her husband Gary di Silvestri earned points by competing in qualifying races in lower level tournaments in New Zealand and North America. She finished at or near the bottom in many qualifying races, but earned enough points to qualify for the Olympics. She was injured in a training run and did not compete in the 10K women's classic on 13 February. Gary di Silvestri (born February 3, 1967 in Staten Island, New York, United States) cross-country skier who unsuccessfully competed for Dominica at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the 15 kilometre classical race. Gary di Silvestri is a graduate of Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island, New York, where he was a member of the football, wrestling and track & field teams. Phyllis Byam Shand Allfrey (24 October 1908 – 4 February 1986) was a West Indian writer, socialist activist, newspaper editor and politician of the island of Dominica in the Caribbean. She is best known for her first novel, '' The Orchid House'' (1953), based on her own early life, which in 1991 was turned into a Channel 4 television miniseries of the same name in the United Kingdom. Jean Rhys, ( ; born Ella Gwendolyn Rees Williams; 24 August 1890 – 14 May 1979) was a British novelist who was born and grew up in the Caribbean island of Dominica. Henry Alfred Alford Nicholls
Sir Henry Alfred Alford Nicholls (27 September 1851 – 9 February 1926) was a physician, disease specialist, horticulturist, zoologist and legislator in, and publicist for Dominica for over 50 years. He published on a wide variety of topics and was awarded a knighthood for his services just before his death. Biography Nicholls was born on 27 September 1851 in Spitalfields and baptised at nearby Christ Church on 31 December. He was the eldest of five children of Elizabeth Ann Pitkin and Thomas William Nicholls, a surgical instrument manufacturer. The family lived at 258 Kingsland Road, where Thomas practised his trade; later he was in business there with his second son, Walter James. Nicholls attended the Whitechapel Foundation School.
