''White1'' is the third album by Sunn O))), released in 2003. It was the most significant departure from their original style to date. Each track was experimental in its own way, with Julian Cope reciting poetry for half of "My Wall", Norwegian lyrics sung by Runhild Gammelsæter of Thorr's Hammer as an intro to a drum machine and stoner metal bass riff in "The Gates of Ballard", and the drone track "A Shaving of the Horn that Speared You". The lyrics of "The Gates of Ballard" come from "Håvard Hedde", a Norwegian folk song. Another metal version of "Håvard Hedde" was recorded in 1995 by the Norwegian band Storm. In ''Q'' magazine's August issue (named the loud issue), they named ''White1'' as the 18th loudest album of all time, just above AC/DC's ''Back in Black'' and below the Jimi Hendrix Experience's album ''Are You Experienced''. Founded by Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley, Sunn O))) is an experimental drone metal band that formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1998 originally under the name "Mars". Julian David Cope (born 21 October 1957) is an English musician and author. He was the singer and songwriter in Liverpool post-punk band the Teardrop Explodes and has followed a solo career since 1983 in addition to working on musical side projects such as Queen Elizabeth, Brain Donor and Black Sheep. Cope is also an author on Neolithic culture, publishing ''The Modern Antiquarian'' in 1998, and a political and cultural activist with a public interest in occultism and paganism. The Los Angeles-based label was initially formed "just to put out" the debut albums by Thorr's Hammer and Burning Witch. Runhild Gammelsæter
Runhild Gammelsæter is a Norwegian musician notable for being the vocalist for the American bands Thorr's Hammer and Khlyst. She works as a professional biologist and holds a Ph.D. in cell physiology. Biography Runhild Gammelsæter was a 17-year-old foreign exchange student from Norway when she joined Thorr's Hammer along with Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson. After six weeks, which was the time it took to release '' Sannhet i Blodet'' and record '' Dommedagsnatt'', the band split up due to Runhild returning to Oslo, Norway. ''Dommedagsnatt'' was released soon afterwards in 1996 via Southern Lord Records. The four other members of Thorr's Hammer went on to form the band Burning Witch. In 2006, she helped form the band Khlyst along with James Plotkin and Tim Wyskida. ''Flight of the Behemoth'' (also known as ''3: Flight of the Behemoth'') is the second album by Sunn O))). Background and release The band collaborated with the Japanese noise artist Merzbow, who mixed tracks 3 and 4, and a recording of the two performing together at the 2007 Earthdom Festival in Tokyo was added for a 2007 2CD reissue in Japan. Southern Lord released this version as a download on Bandcamp in 2013. The French label Bisect Bleep Industries released the first pressings of the 2LP version in 2002 (200 copies on black vinyl, 150 on red, 150 on clear), with the bonus track "Grimm & Bear It", which was recorded live at Gaba in Los Angeles in 1998. Southern Lord remastered and re-released this version (800 copies on gold & black splatter vinyl for Record Store Day 2020's third drop, 500 on gold) in 2020. Joe Preston (born 1969) is an American bass guitarist and a former band member of the rock bands Earth, Melvins, Men's Recovery Project, The Need and High on Fire. Preston has also played with Sunn O))), and has his long-running solo project called Thrones. In 2007, he joined Harvey Milk in the studio for the recording of ''Life... Jessamine (band)
Jessamine was an American post-rock band, that recorded three albums for Kranky records between 1994 and 1998, and a number of singles for other record labels. These singles were later collected by the band on a self-released compilation album in 1997 entitled ''Another Fictionalized History''. Their single "Cellophane" was a minor college radio hit in the band's native Seattle, getting frequent airplay on KCMU (now KEXP). The band's sound was influenced by the works of Krautrock bands such as Can and Neu!, and their first album also bore some sonic resemblance to the sounds of early 1990s bands from the UK shoegaze scene.
