Whitby Lifeboat Station
Whitby Lifeboat Station is a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboat station located in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. It is one of nine situated along the Yorkshire coast. Whitby has had a lifeboat station since 1802, with the RNLI responsible since 1861. In its 200 plus year history, Whitby has had five different lifeboat stations (although not all operated at the same time). A sixth lifeboat and station was located at , just up the coast from Whitby, and whilst it was considered separate from Whitby, it was crewed by men from the Whitby lifeboat. The present day station covers a huge swathe of the northern coast from the Humber to Hartlepool, and is regularly listed as the busiest in the north of England. Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Scarborough borough of North Yorkshire, England. D-class Lifeboat (IB1)
The D-class (IB1) lifeboats are inflatable boats serving in the RNLI inshore lifeboat (ILB) fleet as well as a number of Independent Lifeboats around the UK and Ireland. Although they are known as the "IB1" at times, they are the latest development of the D-class lifeboat and as such are mainly referred to as a "D-class". This class of lifeboat is one of the smallest operated by the RNLI, and they are a common sight at lifeboat stations round the coast. The D-class (EA16) lifeboat is a class of inflatable boat operated since 1987 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution of the United Kingdom and Ireland. It has been replaced operationally by the D-class lifeboat (IB1), D-class (IB1), but many are still used as part of the relief fleet, as boarding boats for the larger classes of lifeboat and by the RNLI Flood Rescue Team. Shannon-class Lifeboat
The Shannon-class lifeboat (previously FCB2 – Fast Carriage Boat 2) is the latest class of lifeboat currently being deployed to the RNLI fleet to serve the shores of the British Isles. The Shannon class is due to replace the Mersey class carriage-launched lifeboat, the remaining Tyne-class lifeboats, and to also replace the Trent-class lifeboats in due course. Great Gale Of 1871
The Great Gale of 1871 was a severe storm in the North Sea which struck the north east coast of England on Friday 10 February 1871. Shipping near the town of Bridlington was severely affected by the storm, and, in an attempt to rescue seamen, the RNLI lifeboat RNLB ''Robert Whitworth'' was put out of action and the fishermans lifeboat ''Harbinger'' upturned with nine locals on board, killing six of them. Awards Of The Royal National Lifeboat Institution
A number of Royal National Lifeboat Institution awards have been established by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) since its creation in 1824. None are approved by the Crown, and are therefore unofficial awards. As such, they do not appear in the official British order of wear, although the principal lifesaving award, the ''Medal of the RNLI'', can be worn on the right breast in uniform by members of the British armed forces. Saltwick Bay
Saltwick Bay is a north-east facing bay approximately to the east of Whitby, on the east coast of North Yorkshire, England. The bay contains the Saltwick Nab alum quarries, listed under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. The bay is part of the Saltwick Formation and known for its collections of fossils. The ''SS Rohilla'' hospital ship sank in the bay in 1914, and the fishing trawler ''Admiral Van Tromp'' was shipwrecked there in 1976. The bay is accessible through Whitby Holiday Park. Ruswarp
Ruswarp village lies within the Scarborough borough of North Yorkshire, England. It is around from Whitby, at the junction of the B1410 and B1416 roads, on the River Esk and the Esk Valley Line, with trains stopping at Ruswarp railway station. Originally it was called Risewarp (Old English hrīs wearp, ) meaning 'silted land overgrown with brushwood'. Northern Rail serves the station and Bus services connect the village to the surrounding area. A schooner () is a type of sailing vessel defined by its rig: fore-and-aft rigged on all of two or more masts and, in the case of a two-masted schooner, the foremast generally being shorter than the mainmast.
