Whirlpool (1959 Film)
''Whirlpool'' is a 1959 British crime film directed by Lewis Allen and starring Juliette Gréco and O. W. Fischer. The score from Ron Goodwin established him as a film composer. It was shot at Pinewood Studios and on location in the Rhineland including Koblenz and Cologne. The film's sets were designed by the art director Jack Maxsted. Plot summary A beautiful girl Lora (Juliette Gréco) asks Rolph (O. W. Fischer) if she can travel on his barge down the Rhine. Rolph agrees to this and helps her to escape the clutches of murderer Herman (William Sylvester), who is obsessed with Lora. The local police approach Rolph and ask him to work together with them to lure Herman on board the barge using Lora as bait. Herman manages to hide on board and then takes control of Rolph's barge using a gun he has. Lewis Allen (director)
Lewis Allen (25 December 1905 – 3 May 2000) was a British-born director whose credits included classic television series and a diverse range of films. Allen worked mainly in the United States, working on Broadway theatre, Broadway and directing 18 feature films between 1944 and 1959. From the mid-1950s he moved increasingly into television and worked on a number of the most popular shows of the time in the US. Career Allen was born in the small Shropshire town of Oakengates and attended Tettendan Hall in Staffordshire. ''Ferry to Hong Kong'' is a 1959 British melodrama/adventure film directed by Lewis Gilbert and starring Curt Jürgens, Sylvia Syms, Orson Welles and Jeremy Spenser. Plot Mark Conrad, a debonair Anglo-Austrian former playboy and junk owner, now an alcoholic down-and-out, is expelled from Hong Kong. He is placed on an ancient ferry boat, the Fa Tsan (known to its crew as the Fat Annie), despite the protests of the pompous owner, Captain Cecil Hart. ''My Man Godfrey'' is a 1957 American CinemaScope comedy film starring June Allyson and David Niven. It was adapted by Peter Berneis, William Bowers and Everett Freeman, and directed by Henry Koster. The film is a color remake of Gregory La Cava's 1936 screwball comedy of the same name. Allyson played the role created by Carole Lombard in the original version, and Niven took on the role made famous by William Powell. Niven had played the role of Tommy Gray, Godfrey's former classmate, in a 1938 radio version. George Mikell (born Jurgis Mikelaitis; 4 April 1929 – 12 May 2020) was a Lithuanian-Australian actor and writer best known for his performances as Schutzstaffel (SS) officers in '' The Guns of Navarone'' (1961) and '' The Great Escape'' (1963). Victor Brooks (11 November 1918 – 19 January 2000) was a prolific English film and television actor. He specialised in character roles, police inspectors in particular, in British thrillers such as '' Cover Girl Killer'' (1959), ''Witchcraft'' (1964), and '' Devils of Darkness'' (1965). In 1961, he narrated the fifteen minute instructional Short, 'The Warden, His Duties and Training'. Albert Geoffrey Bayldon (7 January 1924 – 10 May 2017) was an English actor. After playing roles in many stage productions, including the works of William Shakespeare, he became known for portraying the title role of the children's series ''Catweazle'' (1969–70). Bayldon's other long-running parts include the Crowman in ''Worzel Gummidge (TV series), Worzel Gummidge'' (1979–81) and Magic Grandad in the BBC television series ''Watch'' (1995).
